Need help badly. I have a wrong IP/Address and can't connect.

My ip address on one of my computers is wrong. It starts with 168.192.2.1 and it's supposed to be starting with 192.168... etc. For some reason it's not connecting to the internet. I'm stuck on how to fix this darn problem. It's bothering me like crazy. I've tried everything to get it to work but have failed. My signal strength is good and in the properties menu it looks like information is being sent but not recieved. How can I change the ip address back to normal? What is causing this problem? I'm using a wireless g network card for my desktop computer. Whenever I go to the properties menu it says wrong security key. This never happened before and it never asked for a security key.
Please help me someone.

Thanks

can you tell us a bit more about your setup?
what computer(s) do you use, how are they connected, etc.

I have a Pentium 2 desktop computer upstairs in my house which is utilizing a wireless g network card (microsoft brand). I also have a laptop pentium 4 which I am also using wireless connection as well. I have a wireless microsoft broadband router which is used to connect the two computers to the internet. I bought all microsoft products since there will be no conflicts because they are all compatible with eachother. I've installed all the software which came with the wireless router on each computer of mine. I've been using this configuration for a long time and have never came into such a problem such as this. My computer upstairs (desktop) one started giving me this problem only like a week ago. I'm figuring that the only reason why it won't connect to the internet is because the IP address is wrong. How can I change it back to normal? Can I reconfigure this IP manually or force it somehow to change back?

try this:

go to the start bar /run and type cmd to bring up the command promt window.
in that window type the following at the promt C:\Documents and Settings\username>
Code:
 ipconfig/renew
this should cause the network card to request a new ip address from its DCHP server (the router) hopefully resetting it to the correct ip.

once you have issued the renew command type
Code:
ipconfig/all
to review your configuration, this can be very useful as it gives ip address, subnet mask and mac address of your network card, enabling you to assisn a fixed ip address to it from (most) routers.

I've tried ipconfig/renew and that didn't seem to work. Is there any other way to by pass this? It's not allowing me to renew it for some reason.

try ipconfig/release then ipconfig/renew, other than that i suggest removing and reinstalling the software and drivers for the card

Welcome to the board lamal3

What are the operating systems you're running there? WinXP? Win2k? 98?
You could try the release command ipconfig /release (from a command prompt) then a reboot to see if it renews by itself. Alternatively you could also assign a static ip address to the pc in question, but we'd need to know the operating system to further explain how to do that.

I'm running windows Xp on my computer. Is there anyway to change my through manually? How could it be working before and all of a sudden not anymore? Could a virus cause this to happen?

What happens when you click on the blinking monitors in the system tray (in case you have such), or in the connection properties. And select TCP/IP and change the IP address manually to your way 192.168...? Does it not remember the setting?

Make sure that ip autoconfiguration is disabled in the registry

I've tried manually changing the ip to 192.168.... however it still does not work. I get a good signal but still it's not recieving. I even tried pulling out the wireless network card and putting it back in, I thought that maybe that might work since pulling it out might restart it but it didn't. How do I disable autoconfiguration in the registry? I'll try that out. Has this situation ever happened to anyone out there?

OK let's try something like that... a dummy way to deal with the problem. Try putting out the card, restart, go back to win, shutdown, put the card in another PCI slot. Then you should have a brand new LAN connection for this card - untouched. Set the options for the connection. This time it should work. If it doesn't probably would be better to try reinstallation or something. Sad but... yeah that's what Windows teaches us - install, reinstall, etc up to infinity.

Good luck

this is just a thought about all this stuff but if your working with any kind of router like; Linksys, Netgear etc... go to your router configurations linksys setup is 192.168.1.1 in your address bar in your explorer in the setup it will say what your ip's will start with like 192.168 or something like that and you can change that in there and then apply the changes in there but that is just my thoughts about it....
