Router Problems

Hi first time post,

I got a router quite a while ago and I've always had this problem however I've never had the time to properly fix it although I've tried.

I have a router which is meant to allow the 2 computers I have to both use the internet.

However even though my network works, (ie I can share files etc)

The internet only works properly on 1 computer on the other it:

Starts up and extremely slowly goes to the hompage form there it is almost impossible to get anywhere as it runs so slow. You cant download anything either.

On the other compuer the internet runs fine without problem

What's wrong I'm sure routers are meant to allow me to use the internet on many computers.

IS it a fault in the router or the setup?
Does any1 know what to do?

Thanks in advance for your help.

i suspect what is happening is machine one is acting as a gateway for machine two, so instead of the second machine connecting directly to the net through the router, its trafic is being redirected via the first PC.

there are a number of possible causes for this, what is the make and model of your router, i might be able to trackdown a manual for it.

Welcome to the board TTT
What operating systems are you running there? And what type of internet connection is it?

1. Do you use the DHCP server on the router or you use static IP settings?
2. Does the problem exist if only the computer with windows XP professional ( the one that you have problems with) is connected and the other one is off or just the cable is disconnected?

OK,
Just open one command prompt and type there

ipconfig /all

and copy the generated result so I can see it.
You should do thes on both computers so I can see the difference in the setings.

On comp that internet works (XP HOME)

''Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.102
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1''

On comp that internet deosnt work (XP proffesional)

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.101
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1''

PS I think cos I was fiddling with the settings Ive lost the network (i.e I cant share files anymore)
I dont no if this is true yet but I dont think it'll affect fixing the internet?
Should I try and set it up again (the network)

Thanks for all your help.

It seems to be OK.
First stop all firewals on the problem computer and execute from the command prompt this

ping 192.168.1.1 on the problem computer

if this works then try

ping yahoo.com

the first command will tel you if you have connection between the router and the computer
and if you don't then the problem can be in the cable
and the second command will try to make connection with some server of yahoo
You can try it with some other sites just to check if name resolwing works properly

The linksys router should be all set to work right out of the box as a dhcp server,

I would try switching the cat5 cable going to the pc that the internet doesn't work on first (quick and easy)

2nd is to make sure they are all on the same workgroup, meaning router and both pc's, this is needed for file sharing between the pc's also.

Going by the ipconfig that you posted everything is alright with the dns and ip settings the router is sending to the pcs. Is there any kind of firewall or any programs running on the pc that isn't getting internet that is hogging all the resources? Also make sure that there are no firewall settings in XP's built in firewall that may be blocking any traffic.

Another thing to do is to go into the linksys setup screen and make sure that nothing is setup for DMZ host(supposed to be used for gaming so you can host games, it puts one pc in public view on the net) I remember this giving me problems before, while I was gaming I could host but the ex-wife couldn't get internet.

To check workgroup,
On the pc's right click on My Computer the click on properties, then click on the computer name tab, you will be able to see what workgroup the computer is in, check both pc's then if they are different then click on the button to change network id, you will probably have to restart the computer after the change. Now you will have to see what the settings are on the router. Type http://192.168.1.1 into your browser and the linksys setup screen should come up and it will ask you for a login, I don't know what it is or if you changed the login info. There will be a bunch of pages for alot of different settings, the biggest thing is to check the workgroup and also find the dmz host setting.

If you don't know of any firewall or don't have virus software then more then likely you won't have to worry about a firewall, but if you know you have firewall software and/or virus software like norton internet security then try disabling it for now to see if it may be a problem, then if it is you will need to configure the software to work. The biggest thing is to know whether or not you have firewall software, I can't find the xp firewall on my main system but it has never been updated with any of microshafts updates, my notebook on the other hand I remember after one of the latest updates that a firewall and virus scan stuff was installed with it.
