Router Help and Advice :)

I currently have a ORIGO 8400 4 Port Router and after 4 months it no longer will connect to the internet. The router works fine for LAN but it does not retrieve the WAN IP. I contacted my ISP and they said they do not offer any help with routers apart from the configuration settings. I checked all the settings and they are fine. I then contacted the Manufactuer - http://www.adsltech.com and they said to contact my ISP. So im going round and round in circles and i have no solution. Any Ideas?

If this router is the cause of the problems, can anyone recommend a good router for me. It needs to be compatible for the ISP Tiscali which is a BT line which is not Cable because people told me some routers are not compatible with certain ISP's.

Thanks for any advice and help.

JT

Yup some details would be good... do you get the line sync light on your router flashing or lit?

Something to try is ask your isp for some test usernames/passwords so you can check that it is your connection or your router and not an incorrect username/password, for example i know of a "bt_test" one.

If the router is only 4 months old is it not covered by a 12 month warranty from the manufacturer?

Hmm this is the bit that makes me wonder...no line sync means ur adsl is not up. If you can try the bt_test that will give you a more definate answer (i have the username/password for it, PM me if you need them). If it turns out you can not connect with that i would talk to ur isp again and tell them you dont have line sync.

I tried the bt_test login.

Username - bt_test@startup_domain
Password - (empty)

Call me stupid but startup_domain is enterted as startup_domain and i dont have to replace it with my Startup domain.

Anyway i tried it and it did not work. The link light is still flashing.

Im contacting tiscali now about the ADSL Line sync. What i dont understand is i can get ADSL with the modem and not the router.

Thanks Patsy.

The router must be connected to the telephone line without filter or it won't work, because it won't receive the DSL signal. Phones and faxes must have a filter so DSL noise won't reach them. You can't have more than three filters on a phone line (more than three phones) or the DSL signal degrades and the router may not be able to sync it.

Thought id let you know.

I bought a Belkin Modem with a built in Wireless router. Works like a treat! Up and running within 2 minuites. I now have wireless internet on my laptop which is very usefull.

Im having problems with sharing the files between my laptop and 2 other PC's. The PC's cannot access the laptop files, but the laptop can access both the PC's files. Any ideas?

Verify that the firewall of each computer isn't blocking file sharing. This is a common problem with Windows' firewall.

BTW I got a US Robotics USR9106 Wireles router (802.11b/g), with DSL modem and four 10/100 Ethernet ports. It's really easy to get it working, apart from the usual pains of setting up a secure wireless network .

... which requires a real DMZ, if you have a home network...

Don't whether this helps

I had the same problem with a conexant based router and I ended up having to enter the DNS server IP addresses, even though the router had detected them.

I have the same problem with my Origo 4 port adsl router/modem...
Broadband with AOL working for nearly a year on this router and then a few days ago my connection died and now the link light keeps flashing. Didn't change anything and has been dead ever since. But can still connect remotely to my XBox on LAN though.

Contacted AOL to check service availability and they checked the line (looked ok) but router not supported so couldn't help further. Checked username & pw on router (10.0.0.2) and is OK. Ran diagnostics and same error message as JamesT
- Testing ADSL Synchronization FAIL HELP

Can't figure out why this has happened. I tried quickly swapping router with AOL provided ADSL modem (never used) to check line and this didn't work either (but didn't persist checking this as didn't want to mess up my network settings, etc).

I've printed out this thread and will try to use some of the checks (eg bt_test and check DNS server IP addresses, etc)

Any further help would be appreciated.
