What's happening is that the DSL modem can't syncrhonize, so no connection is possible. It's not a problem of DNS or username or anything. If the DSL modem can't get in sync, no data can be transmited, not even authentication.

You did the right thing using the AOL modem, because if you can't get it to work, then the problem is in the line itself and AOL has to help you to get it working. Once it's working with the AOL modem, plug the DSL router you have. In order to avoid messing your systems, it's recomended to do a Ghost image or if you don't have Norton Ghost, use System Restore to get you system to the state it was before using the AOL modem.

Thanks for the support Igalan...

I've got Ghost lying around somewhere so I'll take an image and try the AOL modem properly again (and then call AOL for support). I've just received an email from AOL about generic router settings so I'll check these as well though eg:
- Connection Protocol: PPPoE (VCMUX or VCBASED)
- VPI: 0
- VCI: 38
- Auth: CHAP
- MTU: 1400
... but these shouldn't have changed anyway since it was working in the first place.

I was worried my system got infected or something (being too cocky with mIRC recently) and that this had messed up my network settings - or someone/thing had tinkered with my router settings.

It's certainly got me thinking about getting a proper system backup in place as I was considering a full rebuild.

I'm no expert in DSL lines, but from my experience if the DSL modem can't get in sync, those parameters won't do anything (even if you have the wrong ones). Once the modem gets in sync with the DSL, then with the correct parameters and the correct authentication, you'll get the connection with your ISP.

Nevertheless in order for AOL "technical support" (ugh!) to help you' it's much better if you make things easy for them: use their hardware and whatever software they want installed (even if it's obviously not necessary, but you know how this things work). Since you have Norton Ghost, you know that you can let your computer as if nothing happened after they get it working.

When working with Norton Ghost, take some steps to insure that the image you're doing can be successfully restored: boot with the Ghost CD-ROM and check the integrity of the image, so you know you'll be able to restore it if needed. Also it's a good idea to do a backup using a different method: burn your documents to a DVD or something like this. I wouldn't want to have all my valuable data in a single place; if it fails, everything would be lost.

Similar problem here, I have U.S.Robitics USR9110, it works fine at my house and at the shop but when I try it at my customers house, the ADSL light just flashes, I have loaned her my Netgear DG834 which works fine on her line.
British Telecom have tested her line with no issues.
Mystery ?????
