Advice needed in connecting 2 pc's etc..
My upcoming project is to construct small home network consisting of my table pc and my brother's laptop. I need some advice/clues how to make it all work with minimal amount of investments. Both 'puters have NIC card with 10/100mbps capability and use WinXP Home. My first objective would be to actually connect them and share files between them. Can I do this with just a single rj45 cable? Without any hubs etc expensive equipment..
Second objective would be to share my tabletop's dsl line with laptop. Modem can't help here as it only has one port so it would have to be done using my computer in between www and the laptop. Can it be done, if so with what programs etc.? All advice in this matter is appreciated

you'd need to pick up a crossover cable. it's an ethernet cable with a few of the wires switched around allowing you to connect two computers directly together.
in order to share the internet, you will probably need two ethernet cards in your desktop: one to connect to the modem (assuming this is how you connect your modem?) and one to connect to the laptop. you can then use Windows XP's built in internet connection sharing to share the internet. |
