Buying a router!
I am looking to buy a router for my computer and would like all of your input as to which one i should buy. I am tired of getting pinged by my own ISP and want a little more protection!

Linksys wireless G (+B).
There is a brand new version out with some sort of speed booster. I also have an older (wired) linksys 4 port that worked very well.

DONT get a d-link. I have a d-link. I reviewed a D-link wireless. Get either a linksys or a net gear. Get a wireless G. The wireless card does NOT have to match the brand of the router. I have a US robotics card (by microshaft) and a d-link card. They both work ok. DO NOT GET THE LINKSYS CARD. I REVIEWED IT. TWO OF THE ANTENNA'S SNAPPED.

get yourself an old 200mhz pc, bung 2 network cards in and run smoothwall on it, i swear by it.
http://www.smoothwall.org/about/ you only need a 1-2gb hard drive in the machine to run it

Linksys BEFSR41 is very well made with lots of powerful options...and it is very cheap. Be wary of the Linksys lne-100TX v4 NIC though...I've had a lot of problems with lockups with this card (sketchy drivers mostly likely). Or it could possibly be my gay-ass motherboard. In that case, just disregard the whole thing.
Pretty much just make sure whatever you get is not just a hub...it has to be a switch too. A hub will send all packets to every computer connected to it while a switch intelligently only send packets meant for one computer to that computer. It's like the unit having its own CPU (a little more expensive with it but definitely worth it). This will have a huge bump in speed. Or so I'm informed

using the Netgear DG824m here... has never let me down although setting port forwarding is a pain in the ass with this router, admin panel leaves alot to be desired....... upside is that its really cheap, fast and excellent performance.
Is wireless also aswell as 4 port wired n switched and has a built in firewall too! theyre going for less than £100 now.KF
