New ISP and LinkSys BEFW11S4
I had SBC DSL for a few years, running my Linksys router with 0 problems until I moved to the Sacramento, CA area. I can't get SBC here, but could get Frontiernet.
The only way I can get online through the router is to plug into the modem and have the modem connet first, then unplug from the modem and into the router. I haven't even tried the wireless yet. Of course my old modem(Westell) is incompatible with their crap, so I have to use their Speedstream 5200. I'm not sure but I think that Frontiernet uses PPPoA as opposed to SBC's PPPoE. The LinkSYs has no PPPoA though DOes anyone have any ideas on how I can get my router to work with this or am I SOL and have to get a new router (or tell them to stick it and get cable)??? Any ideas are appreciated. Last edited by Sinkalip; 01-10-2004 at 02:05 AM. |

Ouch bud.. actually did you have your PC hooked direclty up to the DSL at one point when you first got it? I am pretty sure that PPOE authenticates on the MAC address.
What you have to do is get your router to match the mac address of your PC's nic card.. that might work. There is an option in the LInksys setup to do that. Otherwise you might have to call your provider and have them reset your authentication.. so you can hook it up for the first time after that with your router.

Yeah, I figured as much. Unfortunately, when I have to speak to them, I am going to get angry. Who the hell uses PPPoA anyways? I'm not sure I even know what ATM is.
Anyhow, I tried the router first, then the modem. I try to avoid any "DSL Installation CD" at all costs. Even WinXP's PPPoE doesn't work for this. So I installed their stupid CD and in worked with the modem. As I said before, the router 'sort of' works, but then there is severe packetloss (Noticably worse in onling games), as the router doesn't play well with the modem. I didn't see anything on the LinkSys site, so I guess I'll call the ISP and see. (And try not to cuss them out) |

Well, I told them to stuff it and got cable (ComCast). Better speeds and up & running with the whole network in about 10 mins, and that only took so long because at there are at least 3 other wireless networks in the neighborhood.
I'm all better now....Thanks |
