Buying a new router....suggestions?

I'm in the market to replace this complete pile of shit router Earthlink has given me. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good router and DSL modem....or perhaps a combo (that's what I have now). I don't currently have two computers, but I would like to have that as an option as I will probably be getting another one soon. I will need the router to be able to allow me to do anything...like set up game servers, and send DCCs (something highly missed). Since I don't have two computers, I don't know why I would want wireless. If I do have two at one time, they would probably both be im my room or the room next to mine, so I wouldn't mind running wire. I don't want to spen over $100 on both the router and modem, which I don't think should be too much of a restriction considering how much prices have dropped. Thanks for any input.

I've got a 'thompson speedtouch 510' , very pleased with it, easy to set up, build in firewall.
It came with my adsl abbo, and i don't know what you would pay for it in the us.

whatever you do, avoid the Netgear DGM series of all in one router/firewall/switch. theyre the silver ones with the antennae at the back.. although they are perfect for normal use, they lack any in depth configurational options that you can mes with.

Id suggest a D link, thats what im looking to replace mine with.

____________

tsk tsk tsk... greffov! you poor soul with the alcatel.. are you purposely trying to get the boy in trouble? hehe!

The two big ones are:

Linksys
D-link

Linksys seems to be the one thats more user friendly.

I have a D-link di-624. Its pretty good. It took a LONG time and 1 phone call to customer service to get it running. Since I have had it, I have had NO trouble with it.

I have almost finished a product review for it, I just need to add what has happend to it lately. I try and get the finshed product review out in the next day or two.

Ive never had problems with Linksys myself, DLink arent bad but can b a bit fiddly. Linksys generally tend to be expensive but are very good quality. I would suggest a combo - modem and router, i run one of those and they are very useful but a pain if something goes wrong as you are assured of no network and no net but to be honest it rarely goes wrong often.

I decided to go for a SMC Barricade, not well known but an excellent bit of kit! Its easy to use and configure and vary rarely do i hav any problems with it. Also they helpline was very good when i rang them (dont ask! My own silly fault!) It also has a parralell printer port built in for network printer sharing which is handy!

Heres mine: SMC Barricade

One more thing, if you are going wireless, I suggest that you get your cards and the router to be of the same make.

Edit- get the review HERE

I am using a US Robotics 802.11g. Their support is horrid. I would suggest that if you are going to network, you go with a 802.11g router instead of a 802.11b. This Thread explains it a little. I have also used a linksys, and didn't have any problems with it.

Ouch vern.. I have to say that lately US Robotics has really botched up alot of things.. that is of course my personal opinion.. but I degress.

They used to be top notch in all their hardware.

LOL. Well Cirga, my USR router and USR wireless card work just fine. It took me awhile to figure it all out, because I got little help from USR and what help I did get was vague at best. I just wanted the 802.11g technology, and there were'nt many options out there at the time.
