Chipset question

Hey guys,

I'm thinking about building my first PC from scratch in a few weeks and I've got a question. When I was looking at the mobo I had picked out it said that it was made for a specific chipset. Therein lies my problem. I'm pretty knowledgeable about most hardware components, but chipsets...huh-uh. I know what one is (errr..technically speaking), but I wasn't aware it was something I'd have to buy separate from the motherboard itself. I dunno, excuse my ignorance.

It's an intel mobo cause that's what processor I'd picked out, and it said it was built for a 850 chipset. Is this something I'm going to have to buy and install separately from the mobo?

thanks!

Well I am assuming you are using a Pentium 4, because I believe those are what the 850 chipsets are for. Basically on your motherboard it will show what the chipset supports such as lets say you had one by asus, on the front of the box or somewhere it should say:

Supports Pentium 4 up to 1.7GHz.

It should say something like that, if not it will say just Supports Pentium 4. Nothing really to, if it were an AMD motherboard you should look into chipsets just because of how they all perform. Anyways though, I wouldn't worry about it. :p

Check out intel or the motherboard manufacturer's website.
