It appears to be a socket 478, and I believe the fastest CPU it can handle is a P4 3.4 GHz Socket 478... technically the "Extreme Edition" 3.4 GHz is faster than the regular 3.4 GHz P4, but it costs twice as much and is usually not faster in the slightest...

Probably not... while the 3.4Ghz will probably be about 20% faster than the 2.8Ghz, most games aren't processor bound... your processor is more than fast enough to run the game, if you want to make it look better, you're probably better off saving up for a better video card, or speeding up your hard disk setup, rather than getting a faster processor.

(Edit: By the way, I played GR:AW on the 360... Uberfun.)

better video card?! *cries*

I just upgraded to the X850. I think its the last agp card ati did no? if its not, what is? (my mobo only supports agp, not pci-x) I am investing in some SATA drives this month so this should hopefully improve speeds. Do you know if ill be able to use my current ghost image to restore onto the sata drives?

thanks for the help.

You SHOULD be able to ghost image over to the SATA drives, but switching to a RAID (or SCSI, for that matter) would be a lot more troublesome, if I remember correctly.

Oh, and there are rumors that a version of the X1800 will be released for AGP, but I haven't seen any... there are, however, X1600's for AGP already out.

You may want to look into buying a new motherboard sometime in the not-too-distant-future though, because the gap between AGP and PCI-Express will only grow from here...

I was seriously considering upgrading my motherboard but when i heard about the requirements for vista, i thought id wait it out and see what MSoft put out as the requirements before purchasing the upgrade.

Im pretty keen on getting a pci-x compatible mobo but i just cant justify the spend untill i know what vista will require since it may be that they usher in further hardware that will require even more gfx power than is currently available. OK so that statement is a bit muddled but im sure most of you get what im on about.

If i was to upgrade now, i really dont know what id go for. Im quite happy to take the plunge and go for mobo pack from novatech.co.uk (thanks ripperroo for the help last time round). They always run well and the costs are alot cheaper than purchasing parts separately and the old parts get handed down to my brothers.

regarding hard drives, for the xp install, would it be best to do

PLAN A
____________________
40-80gb drive for xp install
200-300gb drive for other files

PLAN B
____________________
150-300gb drive for xp install with 2 partitions :
200gb drive for other files

thanks

kf

ps. is partitioning your drive even the thing to do nowadays, considering how large and cheap drives are today?

I know people who swear by partitioning the drive, and separate the OS from everything else to make reinstalling easier. I've no use for it, personally, so it really all depends on how you're going to use it.

40 Gigs is more than enough for your XP partition there. I am a partitioner here just for the sake of easy re installation if something gets hosed. Normally I get everything just the way I like it and then create an image of it just in case. I also like to keep any data files in a separate partition.

my $.02

The only thing that I see is if you play games at all. If you do the growing requirements may need a few more mb\gb on the main drive. I just recently installed a game that was just over 6 Gb. That being said that if you don't play any/many games this should not be a problem.

Just a thought though.
