yes another noob looking for possible processor upgrade

hello all i am pretty new with the internals of my desktop so if you need more info to help me out let me know. i know its not the best but i have a gateway right now and was looking into a possible processor upgrade. what i have right now is a pentium 4 1.9ghz 478 pin. as for the mother board all i can tell you is el paso 2 if that means anything i looked but could not find on intels website. i searched trying to use the bios # but all i saw on intel.com was 65a mine is pt84510a.15a. oh yea its a 400mhz system data bus if that helps. again i appreciate your time and patience with me as i get to further understand what i am getting myself into.

The biggie here is the pin count: Any Pentium 4 with the Socket 478 connector should work... this means the newest P4s, the Prescott, is out of reach, but Northwood processors (Which go up to 3.4 GHz) can be used. Be sure to get a good heatsink too, since the stock one is probably designed for lower thermal dissipation.

(In case you're also thinking of overclocking... The Northwood core isn't a good choice to overclock with.)

thank you i dont much about overclocking so i wasnt planning on it. so your saying the best i can get is the 3.4 and that as long as the pin count is the same it will work? i wasnt sure if the if thats all i needed to match up. also could you recommend a good heatsink?

before you rush out and spend any money it would be best if you check further into your motherboard so you can be 100% sure it will accept the new cpu, there is a little application freely available called CPUZ that will help you to identify it, its available from here http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-131.zip (direct download link)

The fastest processor I can see that Intel certifies to work is the 2.6 GHz (here), so if you want to play it safe, stick to 2.6 (Which will also be significantly cheaper than the 3.4 Socket 478), but 3.4 SHOULD work (Just make sure you can return it if it doesn't).

The Intel 845 chipset won't work at FSB 200 (quad pumped to 800) which is requiered for pentiums 3.00 and up (except P-4 3.06 GHz). So play it safe and get a P-4 2.6 or 2.8 478 FBS 533 Mhz . Look at the motherboard manufacturer website for CPU compatibility, because a BIOS upgrade may be necessary.
