A7N8X Problem

Okay here goes. I am building a new system. Motherboard a7n8x deluxe, 1gb corsair xms pc 2700, ati 9600 raedon aiw. When I place my old hd from my previous computer the MB goes through its process brings up the windows partition screen to choose which partition you would like to start. After selecting the partition the screen goes black with a quick blue screen. Shut off the computer and starts over. My Hd is an older IBM deckstar. The new one I will be using is a Seagate 160 gb 7200 rpm and a 40 gb seagate 7200 rpm. However when i reconnect it to my old MB it comes up as an error HD but it will boot. I have a lot of info on this drive. Could it be that the drivers from my old MB are conflicting with my HD. Is it possible to format the 160 gb hardrive then hotswap the my old hardrive in the machine so that i can at least view it and remove the contents. Thanks for your help

What operating System is on your older HD? If its Windows 98 that could definately be a problem. what you may consider doing as an alternate is:

Hook up one of your new Hd's.. get a fresh clean install of Windows on there.. and then plug in your older HD as a slave and just copy anything you need off of it.

I am using windows xp home with sp1 and all the updates. I was considering do exactly what you said. I was just waiting to get a copy of Windows xp pro. In the meantime I was just trying to set up the new system so it would be ready. Thanks for the info.

Ahh ok gotcha. Thats very odd then. WinXP shouldnt have any problem switching Motherboards.

When it goes black.. and reboots.. that could be a problem with your FSB settings for your CPU. What CPU are yo urunning on that Motherboard and what is your FSB setting in your Bios?

Your right berks. i have a barton 2500. The FSB is 166. I have tried to even drop it down to run at less that the 2500 but it still won't boot. What should my memory be set at. I believe it is set at sync mode with the FSB which would be 166. I am new to the a7N8x bios so I might have a bios issue

This is something I cut from another forum about this motherboard.. double check your settings against this.. see if there is a difference:

If your jumpers are set correctly, hit Del during post to enter Bios, then adjust you settings so your FSB is 166 and your CPU multiplier is 11, and ensure that the memory ratio is 1:1 while you're there. That should sort you out.

You could always drop it back to 133. What type of Vid card do you have in that system? And what Power supply are you using?

Just trying to think of any other hardware that may be having a problem..

I have the same Mobo. I didn't try putting my old HD in until I already had my new HD in and an OS intaleed on it, then I put my old HD in and got all the files off of it without any problems. So I suggest doing as Cirga says and build your new system and get it running, then plug in your old hard drive and get everything you want off of it.

I put my users manual in a box, so I'll look it up, but if I remember right it's in the bios.
