The best alternative I know is the ASUS A7N8X Deluxe! It also has nforce 2 and has won countless awards from tech magazines! Even though it IS dual channel capable, you don't have to use that feature if you don't want to. But I would reccomend at least 512 mb of ram if you are going to be using win xp.....whatever motherboard you choose!

Well I got mine off ebay (retail box) for $115.00. I just checked and they have an OEM version $89.99. They also have a retail version starting at $122.95. (The retail version
also has the revision 2.0 upgrade-which means you don't have to flash your BIOS to use the PC 3200 sticks of DDRAM.) The retail is what I would suggest as a LOT of people on this board have one already in their system! Both of these are " buy it now" which means you don't have to wait until the auction is over to get it. Just type in asus a7n8x deluxe in the search window on ebay and go to the "buy it now" tab and from there click on the "lowest priced" link and that will show all the motherboards you can get now at the lowest prices. Hope this helps!

As far as your other motherboard goes, I just did a google search and typed in gigabyte ga-7n400-L1 (I thought it was Li) and it looks to be chaeper than the ASUS a7n8x deluxe, so if that is what you want, I would go for it because it is cheaper. They both seem to have the nforce 2 chipset and take pc 3200 DDRAM, but other than that the asus has dual LAN and 6 USB 2.0 ports and they both have good audio, but I don't know how good the gigabyte onboard sound is, but I DO know how good the asus onboard sound is....I have had people ask me why I am using my soundblaster audigy 2 ? They say the onboard sound in the asus is equal to or even little bit better! So it is really up to you. You can do comparisons between the two by going to google and just typing the motherboard name and add specs to it and it will give you the specs for that motherboard. I would look closely at the specs of each and then decide based upon what you wanted to do with it.
