Modem Install

I just experienced the strangest thing ever. I was installing a PCI modem in a Hp/Compaq D220 minitower, and the second I seated the card in the first PCI slot, the PC powered up!

I almost smacked myself because I ALWAYS unplug before I tinker, but this situation intrigued me. I inserted the card again and the PC powered up. I tried the other 2 PCI slots with the same results.

I finally left the modem installed and powered it up completely, and everything appeared to work correctly; but when I shut the system down, it shut off then restarted. The only way to shut it down completely was to hodl the power switch.

has anybody run nto anything like this before, and what did you do about it?

TIA!

I think this is the whole reason they say you should always unplug the PSU before working on your computer because you could mess up the motherboard jump stuff around like that.

Well, obviously I agree with you - but the problem is that I had orginally installed the modem without the power plugged in, but we couldn't shut it down without holding in the power switch. I didn't know about the other problem until I started troubleshooting it again to work on the first issue.

The two issues are related, and frankly, if I didn't have the power plugged in to the PC while re-installing the modem I wouldn't have discovered this valuable tidbit of information.

Additionally, if all you can do is point out the obvious then your advice is useless.

Whatever...

The truth is, your advice concerned something I already knew, and even admitted to; but the problem was NOT caused by installing the modem with the power plugged in. I encapsulated my trouble for easier reading, but that is not how the issue originally materialized.

You decided to rub my face in the problem without even asking any additional questions, in typical, arrogant, computer geek fashion. I thought I would come here and get a quick answer, but instead, I will figure out the problem on my own. You are the reason why IT professionals get a bad rap and are stereotyped as insensitive, condescending jags.

I am far from an IT geek i own a construction compnay and do this for fun. At no point was i rubbing your face in it i just stated that this is the reason why people say not to do this with the PSU plugged in. I learn as much from people asking questions here as i do from reading stuff on the internet. I am sorry you could not find your answer here and i am glad you figured out your problem best of luck to you!
