I'm running XP Pro on a P3 500 w/ 512 MB RAM. It runs infinately better than it did on 98SE or the half hour I had Me running on it. (one of my most triumphant moments was tossing my store bought Me disk in the trash after putting 98 back in!) Sure the performance may not match a better equipped computer, but it does everything I want to do and does it better than any other OS I could be running. I could probably improve the performance a bit by turning off the visual features, but I am one of those shallow "visual" type people who likes lotsa eye candy. As for some sort of "Build Yer Own" tutorial, I am all for it. I doubt I would find any specific hardware reccomendations too binding as I'm sure I would have my own preferences ( Pentium over AMD for instance) but I certainly would enjoy hearing everyones opinions on any hardware. I am definately in the market for an upgrade at this point, but have kept up with upgrading my current rig as much as possible, so I will mostly be interested in cases, MoBo's, CPUs, etc.

knowledge is power LPD! Bring on the free tutorial
! When I got my computer, I purchased the parts from a small firm in Ohio with a good user rating (do your research). They sent me a computer with the wrong parts in it. No matter who you buy your computer from, open the box and have someone make sure EVERYTHING you purchased is in there. In all fairness to the company involved, they already knew what my problem was when I called because they switched my computer with someone else's - Thus I was the only person currently on their customer list with a problem with my order. The other guy got off with a $1000 worth of bonus stuff - I wouldn't call that a problem, Though I would be likely to return it out of (un)common decency. They promptly corrected the issue. They shipped the right computer to me UPS 2 day - a damnsight more expensive than UPS standard. They also upgraded my monitor to a 17 incher for my trouble. In spite of our difficulty in the past I will likely purchase my next computer from these people whose professionalism exceeded expectations in a bad situation. A good way to save 200 clams right off the top is to get a computer with no operating system. You'll save an additional 10%-30% by not purchasing a box with a brand name (dell, gateway, HP, etc). Also if you will have a friend performing upgrades and working with the hardware don't go with an HP. Working on their heavily proprietary cases is like trying to guess the next move in a secret handshake. I charge my closest friends to work on an HP. I won't do it at all for people I don't know. The extra money might be worth it if you want tech support. Unless you can think of a place where you get tech support for free ![]() that my two cents for now. -al

xp home
After a kazillion tweaks...XP home is actually behaving for me at the moment. And Jack, you've convinced me that re-formatting will be with the Pro Edition!

Others may disagree with me, but my experience with XP Pro is upgrade installs (aka "dirty" install) work just fine. I have never done an upgrade from XP Home to Pro, that may be the exception as they are using the same kernal. Upgrades from Win9X changes the OS totally and just saves the settings.

Oh yes, I am aquainted with the recovery partiton......
Got a bud with Compaq. I tried to set him up with Partition Magic and ran into a brick wall. Clean install when feasable is probably always preferable.
