XP Home

I had installed XP home on my main computer, & I really liked it. But I ran into a couple problems I couldn't figure out. I installed Norton's Systemworks 2002 on it & it gave me two errors messages during install, something to the effect that I wasn't authorized to install the program, I clicked on Ignore & finished the install but some of the features were unavailable to me. The second problem is when I went to do the Windows updates for XP, it wouldn't let me do it because it said I wasn't the "administrator". Everywhere I looked in XP I came up as the administrator with total access to the computer, even in the registry. There were no other people set up on the computer, I was the only user of that machine. I could install all my other programs without a hitch. I uninstalled XP & reinstalled & the 2nd time I could download the XP updates but still had a problem with Norton's install. I went to the Symantec site & tried everything they said to do but Norton's still wouldn't install right. I tried to uninstall Norton's but it didn' show up in add & remove programs so I ended up wiping the computer out again. When I reinstalled XP again for the 3rd time, it wouldn't let me do the Windows updates again. I finally gave up & reinstalled Win 98 SE. I would really like to know what the problem was with XP & me.

One of the things you can do is to actually log in as the default administrator of the system. Even though you are the only user on that computer there is still the default administrator account.

The other option you could do is to double check your permissions on the system, I like using the management console rather then using the control panel.

I took a couple of screenshots to try to help explain,

First right click on your my computer icon on the desktop, then click manage. a console window will open up that looks like this



once the window is open expand the local users and group in the left window. And click on users.



Now you should see your username in the right window, right click on your name and select properties. Another window will pop open which looks like this;



On the new window click on the member of tab, once there click add, then another window will open up;



In the new window you will see the text area at the bottom, type in Administrators and click ok, that window will close and in the member of window you should now see Administrators as one of the groups you are now part of, click ok to close everything out and you should be all set. You will need to be an Administrator of the system to do all of this so you will want to log in with the default administrator account that ya setup when you installed XP. Hopefully this helps ya out and gets everything working for ya.

That is really weird that you had those problems. I am using XP Home edition and I recently installed Norton System Works 2002 with no problems. However, I can no longer get ICQ to run even with the latest download and a fresh installation. I'm not sure why since I have had it running on XP home before... oh well.

Yeah, it sucks. It started happening after installing Norton systemworks. I get that stupid "send error report" message and then it crashes.

after installing norton antivirus i cant get msn messenger to close weird

i have had similar problems with xp i tried to install norton antivirus 03 on my pc it said error not all of the files were able to be installed or something like thatand norton didnt even open

i went back to 02 and it worked fine i dont know but although xp is good it is a weird os

norton antivirus 2003 works fine on my computer with xp home

I have Norton o3 and XP home and have no problems either. I have also ran 02. I do however run Norton Systems works on a regular basis which fixes any corrupt files, ect... and will clean out you registry. Its a handy little tool.
