I don't even know what most of these are for. And reading all that stuff they have there gets very confusing.
I have Windows 98se. did all the critical updates except the one for networking which I don't really need since this is home computer and only one. The other updates I wonder about are.... DirectX 9.0a End-User Runtime .NET Framework Version 1.1 Internet Explorer Navigation Sound Update Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package Root Certificates Update Mapped Drives Shutdown Update Which of these do I need or are good to have? And what are they exactly? If you just want to send me some where to read on this stuff, that is fine too. But I am looking for Opinions on this too. Thanks Smiles Donna |

I am running Xp Home (ha ha ha, I know laugh at me) and i always do all the updates whether I think I need them or not. If your system is running fine, then there is probably no need to install any updates. Could they make your system run better or be more secure...... probably.

you do not need most of the ones you listed, but it does depend on what you do with your computer.
Direct X 9 -- you really do not need this unless you are using a very high end video card and you do graphics intensive applications such as playing the new Games or other things that make extensive use of your graphics cards. NET framework-- you only need this if you use Microsofts net passport, or if you use a few programs (usually these are some type of communication software, although this can vary) that require the net framework to work. Generally you will not need this...If you do not have the .NET framework installed and you have a program that needs it then you will get a message telling you that you need to install the .net framework. Most people do not need this. The following: Internet Explorer Navigation Sound Update Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package Root Certificates Update Mapped Drives Shutdown Update I would probably download-- especially the Harddrive casche and the Drives Shutdown package. The sound update is optional

GFI LANguard Network Security Scanner (N.S.S.) checks your network for all potential methods that a hacker might use to attack your network. By analyzing the operating system and the applications running on your network, GFI LANguard N.S.S. identifies possible security holes. In other words, it plays the devil's advocate and alerts you to weaknesses before a hacker can find them, enabling you to deal with these issues before a hacker can exploit them.
