Cant Load Win ME
Hi,
Just bought a third PC for the home so that the missus can go on line and stop using my PC or the Kids One ! Just a basic IBM unit that has been wiped. ( Celeron 500, 6.4 Gb H/D, and 64Mb ram. I picked up 256mb Ram put in and then decided to go about installing Win ME as i thought that 2k or XP may be a bit heavy for it to run. Used Fdisk and created primary partition and then ran ME boot disk all was fine ! put in ME Rom and it formatted the C: drive and went into scan diskand said that there was no error the the screen goes blank for asbout 60 seconds and the displays a message stating there is an "MS Dos Memory extender Error!!!!!" I cannot seem to get passed this error Can anybody help as i am now lost !!! I did also try to load 2k but I get an error stating that the bios does not support that kind of O/S so went back to trying ME but still no Joy !! HELP !!!!!!

I would make sure you have the most up-to-date BIOS and if so, flash that jazz, and it may recognize things. Others will know more.
And, by the way, even with 256, I would consider 2k or XP. Me bites.

Read read read instructions Very carefully. If you find a bios update it will have instructions and information just in case there is something you should be careful of.You mentinoed you bought another stick of ram for the computer.. are you sure that it supports that 256meg stick? Does it pass the memory test when you are booting?

Alfie - also about the RAM, did you install the 256 along side the old 64, because some computers only take multiple sticks if they are the same size. If both are installed, I would try just the 256 and see if it is recognized.

Ah I have just found out the hard way !!! It can take different size memory stick but only as long as each one is not more than 128mb !!! I didnt get an error when i installed but removing has overcome the issues installing the O/S so thanks Guys !
Looks like i will have to try and trade the 1 x 256mb for 2 x 128mb which the board will recognise !!!! We Live....... We Learn........ We burn holes in our pockets ! |
