Booting Problem

Hello everyone, I hope someone can help me out here.

When I boot up, a black screen comes up saying "Invalid BOOT.INI file, booting from C:/" It's no big deal because it's been saying this for like a year now, but me being lazy, never found out what the problem was. What could be the problem? Like I said, it's nothing major, but I would be interested to find out how to fix it. Thanks.

Colin-uk is on a distinguished road
Either your boot.ini file is corrupt or it has an invalid entry
It may just be that it is trying to load a program that doesnt exist anymore.

What OS are you using ?

Windows XP

I can't even find a "boot.ini" file on my hard drive. I did a search for boot.ini, boot, ini and nothing came up. Could it be that I don't have a boot.ini file?

you do have one, trust me...

go into folder options, show hidden files and folders, and unhide system files.

then it will be in the root of the C: drive.

open it in notepad, and copy the contents here...then we can take a look at it to see what might be causing the error. Do not change the contents of it yet.

That's what I did, hidden files and folders are shown and so are system files. I did a search again and nothing came up and I went back in C:\ and searched everywhere and I can't find anything. Could it be called something other than boot.ini? I don't know where else to look.

open notepad, and navigate to C:\

then type boot.ini manually, hit open and see what happens.

go into system properties>advanced tab>startup and recovery settings>...

Threre it says to edit the start up options file manually, click Edit.

click Edit.

that should bring up boot.ini.

What's in a boot.ini file? So there's no way to solve this problem?

here's my boot.ini...should be the default. if you use home edition, you can change pro to home if you want, doesn't matter lol.

Code:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Ok, thanks.

I do have another question, it's off topic though. I need some room on my C:\ drive and there's a folder called "DATA" containing 30 or so files named FACTORY.004, FACTORY.005, FACTORY .006 etc. They're 50MB a piece and take up about 2 Gigs. Then there's smaller files named MAIN.PQI, PART2.PQI, AND PART2A.PQI. Does anyone know if I need these? They certainly hog all out room.

are you the only user of your computer? if so, then i'd rename it first and make sure nothing stops working

if you are not the only user of your computer, ask around the house and see if anyone else needs it, then go through the process i named above.

Well, I'm the only one in my house who has somewhat of a clue of what to do on a computer, so needless to say, no one in my house knows if it's needed, lol. I renamed one of them and nothing stopped or crashed or anything. I'm guessing I don't need them?
