New PC. What is best?
I plan on upgrading my Mother board and CPU very soon. Of course with that upgrade I would like to get some really decent RAM to speed things up.
What would everyone suggest as a good kind to shoot for? I plan on getting a P4 2.7 with an Asus motherboard. (hope to that is). Appreciate any and all suggestions.

Ahhh.. (Big Bad boy here suggests: Consider going with AMD!!)
The Opteron (64 bit) will be available in a couple of months. (See me salivate!!) ANWAY.. I would Strongly suggest getting all of your memory from www.crucial.com. I have had nothing but good luck with it. their Online prices are very good (and they have online specials all the time) AND there is free shipping. You would be like me--> if you order before 10 am you will usually get it in the mail the next day. It is a good idea to keep all of your memory from the same manuf. and crucial will be around. Excellent. Think OPTERON--just hope we can afford it!!

I have had very bad luck with AMD processors. I had a thunderbird which fried. I had an athlon.. which I ended up cracking the motherboard it was on .. trying to put the darned orb fan on the CPU.
Therefore.. I have stuck with pentium since.. and I have never had a problem with them. Maybe its just luck of the draw.. but we'll see. I do plan on getting a case from www.3dcool.com. So if thats the case I may go AMD since I will have the cooling needed for them.

Cirga, it sounds like your past AMD problems were caused by a poor heatsink and fan combo or improper installation. I have had nothing but great results from AMD products and intend to continue to use them.
If you go with Intel I recommend the ASUS P4G8X Deluxe with Corsair XMS series DDR RAM, however, if you choose the AMD route the ASUS A7N8X Deluxe nForce2 Motherboard with the same Corsair DDR RAM. The AMD Athlon64(Hammer/Opteron) will be a very impressive piece of equipment. I'm holding out on upgrading until they are released later this year.

Correct me if Im wrong, but: The Opteron is a server processor aimed to compete with the Itanium. The Hammer (Athlon64) will be the PC 64-bit processor and is supposed to be released in September, but its already been pushed back about 10 times already!!! -JRW |

I just recently upgraded my system, and the memory I went with was some Corsair CMX512-3500C2, which I have been most pleased with.

AMD processor and Asus board... I say Asus rather than Asus or Gigabyte only because the BIOS currently on Gigabyte boards requires that you pay a fee in order to simply flash your bios, however Gigabyte boards have always worked great for me.
You should give AMD another shot, it sounds like you've run out of all your bad luck. Make sure you have plenty of thermal paste/goop and that your case is properly vented and you'll be good to go. |

The thing about what is the best depends on your individual tastes. What appears to be a great pc might appear to be not so great to someone else. It depends on how much money you have and how accustomed to expensive things you are. I wouldn't buy a pc just for bragging rights or something like some people do. Take a look at what you plan to do with it and plan the system around that.
I have had good luck with AMD machines but before that I had pretty good luck with Intel. You can't lose going either way. Intel is a little more expensive. Putting a heatsink on a AMD can be tricky though. |
