I'm not a MAC user so I have a simple ?

I was wondering how similar the MAC osX is compared to the Linus OS. Is it pretty much the same commands for the command line? Whats the gui like also, I would like to see some screenshots of some of you mac guru's out there.

you mean linux? i know Mac OS X was built on top of linux so as it would be more stable and would crash less, although i dont crash that often at all may be once or twice a week?

Talking

I run windows XP, I crash only when I use my Matrix Screen Saver. Takes up alot of computing power, so you know.... Other than that I can keep this computer up for months without a problem.

The only Mac I ever touched was one that was given to me a while back, it's so old that I couldn't even install one of the linux OS'es that run from floppy because of the amount of memeory it lacked. I think I had it powered up for a total of a half hour till I shut it down and set it out for the garbage man. I do like the new macs and will possibly buy one some day.

Actually OS-X is mainly based on a version of Unix called FreeBSD. For more information on it you might want to check here. I've only played around with OS-X a little, but was fairly impressed by it, though it does have a little more eye-candy than I prefer.

There are some Mac OS visual styles out there... have a look at this one (IMO the best one):

http://www.jonmega.com/~iceman/vs/

Also if you want more themes try looking in www.deviantart.com (under Aplication Skins->Visual Styles)

This might sound a little weird, but Linux is NOT UNIX.
OSX is based in BSD UNIX, which is generally considered to be the mother of all UNIXes.

You should know that UNIX is very userfriendly, but that it is picky about it's friends.

You can say it in other words also: UNIX is roughstyle. It is extremely clean, and doesn't aid the user if not stricktly necessary. Linux is much softer and less hard. For instance you can use the -h flag on GNU/Linux's ls which makes filesizes humanreadable (MB's, GB's, etc.) but a typical BSD UNIX does not support that and leaves you with k's. Sun's Solaris has also this rough BSD core in it.

But all this does tell nothing about the silk skin Apple has built for OSX. You don't need to know anything of UNIX to run your OSX machine.
You only need to use it.

The Mac skins come close to the Aqua appearance, but they aren't OSX still.

I have the delight to use OSX so why should I look for a windows theme that immitates it? ;-)

ive been trying to follow the instructions on the Jaguar OSX skin site (link above somewhere) but havent been successfull..

ive managed to install the themes but in the instructions it mentions looking for a folder called Dllcache... where the heck is that folder... ive searched everywhere??? put my settings to SHOW HIDDEN etc.. done a search for it.. everything comes up negative.. im using the first XP release.

whenever i try to overwrite the shell32 or any other system file it just reverts back to the original one right before my eyes...spoooky!

anyway if you know where that folders hiding,, let me know!

Hahahahaha you see the Windows protection working. Must say that it is quite a nice thing to have, although it shouldn't be necessary if (and only if) Windows was designed better. I think the protection is some sort of solution for a problem created by a wrong implementation.

However that's useless talk of mine. I think some people here know where to find the procedure to fool the windows file protection service...

the only reason keeping me from buying a mac is the fact that all my uni stuff is done on pc based software and that i can use lots of 'free' software downloaded from the p2p apps.

Oh and games... mac games are inferrior to pc. and we all know it so any mac heads out there please do not comment... ive already made up my mind

but still maybe this christmas ill treat myself to a mac. one of those see through ones with the nice big flat screen that cost more that the machine itself. lol.

I hate the price on macs.. so expensive.

anyway..

anyone got a solution to my last post??? (above)
