anyone tried lindows?
hello everyone:
i was just wondering if anyone here had tried lindows? what do yo think about it? is it worth the download time? i've never really tried linux, mainly because of the huge downloads(i'm on a dial up connection ) and the fact that from what i've heard ,linux is a little more difficult than windows(and i still mess up my computer more than seven times a week because i like to experiment and explore)anyway...what do you think?is it a good alternative to windows? salu2!!

I heard it wasn't that good from "The Screensavers" on Tech Tv. They said it was like a subscription service that you would have to renew each year or something. They said it would be better to just go ahead and get Windows if it came pre-loaded on some machines they are selling now.

Linux is a very good and stable OS. There are many different flvors of it you can get.. one of the easiest ones to use is Mandrake. While its a great OS.. its meant more for server load then the normal PC user.. the reason is becauase alot of applications currently for windows wont run on linux.
There isnt a subscription for it.. you just buy the software and you are good to go. Lindows is different. Lnidows actually allows you to start up a linux environment while you are in Windows. So you would technically have two Operating systems running at one time on your PC. I have seen someone use Lindows before and it was really cool I just havent gotten around to getting it either.

I tried version 0.9something about a year ago. Formatted my C drive (5 GB), and tried to install. After reboot, the installer said "Delete some of those 40 GB mp3s of Duran Duran on your drive and then try again" or something. This is all. I never even thought of it after.
P.S. I do not listen to Duran Duran and have none of their songs on my PC...:huh :huh :huh |

I have yet to hear anyone say anything good about lindows but i have never tried it my self. If you are a gamer stick with windows , if you are not then surely try linux/bsd mandrake or red hat are good starting points.

you better try someting like knoppix. you can order a cd for a low price. its a full linux distro on 1 cd, and it runs from cd -> you dont have to install anything on your disk to try it! it has automatic hardware detection and a lot of software on it.
And about the crashes: LINUX wil NEVER crash, but this doesnt mean the software running on it doesnt crash, although most linux software is written alot better so it doesnt crash often. and about easy to use: for everyday use it is almost as easy as winBlows, you'll be able to write mails and docs as easy and as fast as with m$ (and for free, and more portable etc etc). but it CAN be dificult sometimes, for example if you want to use unsupported hardware (your hardware vendor doesnt support linux I guess so the linuxcommunity has to make drivers), but when its about installation of software with knoppix that works with the debian packet system which is damn easy. all in all, I guess you better find an computer magazine which comes with knoppix and some info (thats how I got knoppix I'm from holland, and if u're too - you might check http://www.fnl.nl/ct-nl/ (its in dutch, but they feature all linux-knoppix articles online!) and of course you can also check http://www.knoppix.org/ (go to english page). grtz |

"Kernel Panic", but it's very rare. In most cases, the windowmanager crashes (like KDE) and locks the complete OS. It happens too much on those Dell systems to get happy from. Solaris machines sometimes crash too, but that's always on the GUI locking it out. That's the reason why server machines should never run a GUI.Anywayz, that might be a hardware thing ;-) At home I never saw my current server machine crashing!!!

Just look at http://mp.dev.hu/homepage/design6/info.html and don't forget to check the 'other media projects' tab.
