Linux is awesome for webservers, and for programming. The server this site is on will be on Linux before long.

I have an EnGaurd linux box as a webserver, an openbsd box for a firewall / nat, and a freebsd box for development.

I used it to try. I liked it. I'm still thinking about setting it up again. Problem is that at uni everything's on Windows so I need to work on Windows...

I use it for playing the games they have on there, and The Sims. Yeah yeah big deal, but I love it. Works for me, and I get to think that I am special because I can use linux. (barely) LOL :smilewink

Check out VMware (http://www.vmware.com/). You can run Linux/FreeBSD/*nix inside a Win32 window, and vice versa.

I usually have Win2K/FreeBSD 4.5/RH Linux 7.2 going concurrently. Mmmm.

I heard alot of good things bout vmware, so you like it huh? I might have to try it out when I get time. I just got done switching the server over to RH 7.2 from win2k advanced server and I must say the speed is really noticable. Alot more then I thought it would be.

I swear by it. You'll kick yourself for not using it earlier.

Nothing like seeing a complex, multiuser (~10-25+ full-time end-users) PHP app go from 100% CPU usage and a 100-200MB of RAM on an IIS5/Win2K server to 2% CPU usage and 25MB RAM on a *nix box.

Not to mention the added security and a semblance of respect for standards.

Thats definately true, the server is running better then it ever has. I am still very green when it comes to Linux and other OS'es. I think I am to the point that I could get by and be happy with only a nix based OS. Providing that I had X-server and KDE or other GUI to get some of the things done that I don't know how to do through the command line. I like XP for personal use, but it is amazing the programs that are available through the GPL license that you would never find for the M$ OS's.

Thanks for the link Asus Man,

I only use ssh shell now. Back when this was originally posted I had the webserver at my house but since then it is on it's own RH 7.3 box collocated. So now I do everything through ssh. There are times where I have to do some quick searching for the exact command I need to do something but I am getting alot of it down.

How many distros have you tried folks? And do you think there's a distro for everything(games, programming, server etc)? I've tried SuSe (greatest), RedHat (not really good for me, I don't like it), SlackWare (nice but hard to manage with). Currently I have a Debian CD on my desk, and thinking of installing it (a whole month already). Something else as a recommendation?

I don't know if Linux is meant for 'users'... Unix in general was meant for developers, people who understand the system, who write it...
Unix has so many things you 'can' adjust and handle that it is not suitable for a normal user, I would say.

Maybe my idea about Unix is not realy that presentative these days, but my experience at the university is that people run to the NT boxes first, instead of Sun's or Linux machines to read their Hotmail... (<sigh>)

Running a Linux server is never a waste of time, maybe running a Linux desktop machine is...
