Linux Opinion

I'm looking to migrate form windows (XP) to Linux and I wanted some opions on which version is the best (from a hackers point of view). I have found that trying to hack from windows is like trying to dance in a body cast. Any help is appreciated.

greffov will become famous soon enough
Gentoo, clean, up-to-date and very complete. Requires some Linux knowledge and skills though.

Starters better take a distro like Red Hat, SuSe, etc.

Thanks. I'm looking more toward Linux SuSE 9.0 right now. Thanks again.

Before you jump into linux you might like to mess around with a live-cd distro. Those run a linux kernel off the cd. Knoppix ,Morphix , and Damn Small Linux are 3 very good live cd distros.

OH and here would be a list of other live-cd distros.

Knoppix is really nice.. and advantage of Live CD versions is that they will point you to any hardware compatibility problems that you may face.. But, if ur planning on Hard disk install then Red Hat, Suse or Mandrake are better for beginners.

Yeah the download part is a problem. Damn small linux is probably smallest. You might have to buy a copy of the discs, they only cost a few dollars and usually less than $5. AlmostFreeLinux is good place to get copies.
