Question Susie Linux 8.1

I have installed Susie Linux 8.1 on my machine with dual boot for either xp or Linux. The biggest trouble I am having with with KDE is setting up my modem. I keep setting it up but it doesnt' seem to be working, I can't get online. Any suggestions?

Thanx

It seems to not be picking up that i have a modem, as you can tell the modem works in xp but I can't seem to get linux to recognize it. As near as I can tell it doesn't support my modem.
Do I need to replace my modem with one that is in the linux lineup? I found what I beleive to be the linux drivers but being an exteme newbie to linux i haven't a clue how to install them.

Thanks

Can you post the url where you found your linux drivers?
In the worst case you need to compile the bunch yourself.

It's also possible that you have one of those dreaded "winmodems", in which case you will most likely never get it to work in Linux (winmodems rely on Windows-based drivers to work properly). Which make and model of modem do you have? I'll try to look around for some drivers for you if you like.

SuSe is a distro that people new to linux don't usually go around, you are brave You might find you have better luck with Red Hat v 9.0 (Shrike) for the simple fact that Red Hat is easier for beginners and is more likely to work with more of your hardware. Once you've been around linux more and feel comfortable you will find SuSe much more friendly. It's very possible that you do have a winmodem as faolán suggests. Winmodems are more and more common, if you can find an old modem it's more likely to work. You can look at http://www.linux.org/hardware/components.html for a listing of companies currently offering linux drivers for their hardware.

I whoulnt say Red Hat is easier to use, suse isnt that difficult. better try mandrake, that rulez if its about ease of use. Or www.knoppix.org, knoppix is very easy too (you dont have to do anything, it configures itsself automatically!). but trying version 8.2 might help, too....

I think I do have the dreaded win modem, we got the drivers off the homepage for the modem and the modem is a smartlink modem with callwaiting capabilities. I was impressed with my hp printer being recognised and up and running right off the bat we dont seem to have the dvd player working as a dvd either, it recognises it, says its a dvd player and then the dvds don't play, i am thinking that is more a problem of aquiring the dvd playing software for linux. Any clues on where to aquire that? Thanks again
