Hi all,
I want to try Linux out.I already have Bills Bitch xp on a partition and have 35.3gb empty on the other half; it has been formatted. I have d/loaded Redhat9, and have the 3 i386shrike iso files. I havent burnt them to disc yet, as i know they are done differently: Do I burn them to disc as an iso type when Nero gives me that option? Also, even though the redhat site gives details of installs ,its not completely clear on a few things(well ,to me anyway hehe), 1/ How do i burn the files so that they become a bootable cd? 2/ Will i need to make a boot discette? as it does mention that this must be done on systems that cant boot from a cdrom. Any other help or advice on this is greatly apreciated, other comments i have had, have been to try Debain1st,some have said to go down the Unix route...but its all new to me, and it gets a bit heavy trawling through hundreds of links and pages on the variouse pros and cons. Thanx in advance.. |

1. You can use Nero to burn Image (from menu) and pick the iso's (you only need the first 3!). They become bootable.
2. Once you have CD1 burned, you can browse if via WinDos and find the map DOSUTILS, you find some stuff to create a bootdisk there... RedHat 9 install is pretty simple, but... when the installer offers you to do the partitioning for you, don't take that offer and do it yourself using the disk druid tool (not FDISK) and delete your not winwoes XP partition and create a / partition for your OS and a SWAP partition.

If you really want to do a very nice job you can create multiple partitions to make sure your OS will be fine. Let's say you give your OS 6-8 GIG's (on /) and give your desktop 2 GIG's (/home) and give all the rest of your harddisk to a partition which can be your storage dir for movies or mp3z on /storage, /films or /audio...
WARNING!!! When you install the GRUB bootloader you get a menu each time you boot at which you have to specify which OS you want to start. (you can customize this menu to start after waiting for 1 sec, but you should know...) If you don't like this and only want to try, you should not install a bootloader (skip) and create 'emergency' bootfloppys and boot from those (takes some time, but doesn't screw your boot section and windows config)

I usually leave unallocated space at the end of the drive, and let the installer allocate it. works out fine for me.
and if you decide to get rid of linux, and are plagued with the bootloader remaining, do a... fdisk /mbr ;-) |

The easist way i found to burn my Mandrake 9.1 disks was to load em onto my virtual drive then do a straight copy, worked a treat as nero decided it didnt want to burn the CDs! Gah at Nero!

highly recommend to create separate partitions for your operating systems, allocate more space to the one you'll be using more often...
burn the images as iso's in nero, create a boot floppy using the windows version of the boot floppy creator... set your computer to check for the floppy as it's first boot device, pop in your floppy into the drive, your first cd in the cd drive, turn power on in your pc and follow the prompts... it's pretty amazing how easy it is to install linux nowadays, back in the days, x amount of space had to be allocated on the fist partition of the disk and no graphical install available... have fun! -- y |

I've said it before, and I'll say it again a thousand times - If you want to run linux with winXP:
Your safest bet is to put linux on a completely seperate physical drive. Espescially if you are using NTFS. Or in the words of tech gurus the Offspring "You gotta keep 'em seperated..." If you need help recovering your hidden and inaccessible NTFS partition after you ignore this warning, let me know - I've had to do it before. I'll give you a hint, disk druid ain't gonna save you. Just a friendly adviso Feel free to disregard this post altogether.

I want to try Linux but have a very small internal HD.
I do have a 60GB firewire hard drive attached to my winXPpro laptop via the card slot. Is there a way for me to put a linux partition on it that the computer will boot from? I don't think so but was Just wondering if it was possible and seemed somewhat relevant in the thread.
