Unhappy numlock to start???

hello again long time no ip
this question is one for the overlords of the hardware world
the problem i have is after about 20-30mins of the processor staying on ie (burning a film) the pc shuts down and this is the funny bit i can then turn it on by pressing numlock.
so what do you guys/girls think about this is it uncommon or is it as i suspect a fan is down so as a safe messure the system shuts off to stop MELTDOWN
the pc for a bit of info is only 18months old and is a pentium 4 2.93ghz 512mb ram
plz help as i am with this issue
