Celeron is basically just a Generic Processor...
I have one in this System...1.30GHz (1300MHz) my Old System had a P1 (120MHz), but that was Win 95 ![]() Pentiums are usually faster, if you need speed, go with the Pentium.

1)The Celeron chip is based on the Pentium 4 core (current).
2)The Celerons have up to(or more) four times less cache memory compared to Pentium processors (128k vs.....) and cache has a great effect on CPU performance. 3) FSB speed. If I remember correct Celerons run at lower bus speeds. Compared two processors Pentium and Celeron running at the same speed have a great difference in performance. Hope this helps And Welcome to PCTT |

NEVER, EVER buy a Celeron, unless you get it for dirt cheap.
AMD's are often around the same price, and are MUCH faster. In fact, you can often snag an Athlon 64 for pretty cheap... For instance, you can snag an AMD Athlon 64 2800+ for $111, while a 2.8 Ghz Celeron (Which is nowhere NEAR as fast) is only $22 cheaper. General rule of thumb that'll probably last for a few months: Intel for a laptop, AMD for a Desktop. AMD's are faster, cheaper, and most nowadays are 64 bit, wheras if you want a laptop the Pentium M (And the rest of the 'Centrino' chipsets) are fast (Faster than a Pentium 4 at the same clock, actually) and low-power. Bah, that was quite a rant. I'll shut up now.

You forgot to say if your FAN stops working an AMD will burn up under 1 second while a Pentium will not

+ modern mobos have the error preventing capability to shutdown the PC if the temperature of the CPU is above the limits (which for an AMD is 80 Degrees Celsius or so) |

AMD's Athlon64 knows cool 'n' quiet which is said to be stopping the fan if it's doing nothing. It also steps automatically back in performance if it senses it is getting too hot. So no problem in there anymore.

Personally if I was going to build another pc, and didnt need to do video editing, or play really intensive games I would go with the Celleron. I just cant wait for the backlash on this one. Honestly, most people only go with the fastest cpu they can buy simply for bragging rights, with no concern about the amount of heat it generates, or what kind of power pig it might be.

Of course, if one is diligent in cleaning out their fan about every 6 months (or twice a year if you prefer the metric system) an AMD processor will serve you well - probably for longer than you will need it. A little canned air will do the trick nicely.

Oh well, each to their own. I will stick to my strict plan of cleaning mine when the fan comes to a screeching halt. I think I have developed a fear of AMDs after a good friend had 3 of them, the last one was a 1.7 something or other, as I dont follow up on the ratings all that much. Anyway it was built up by a local tec, and it ran hot even for an AMD. So off went the stock fan, and on went a volcano 9. The first time I heard the thing running I said holy b Jesus where in the hell did you get the new leaf blower? He gave it to his daughter, providing she keeps her door closed so he cant hear it, and bought a new factory built P4 and its quiet, runs cool, and his daughter has a new heater for her room.

I've got a barton core athlon xp 2500 (≈1833 ghz). I installed the processor with the stock AMD heat sink included in the retail package. After 2 years, my processor has never seen the north side of 65 degrees Centigrade. As for the noise, it is similar to the noise generated by the fan on a playstation 2.
If ambient noise is an issue (it is for me, since I use my computer as a recording studio) try to avoid setting your tower on a hard surface, as this will magnify noise transmission quite a bit. Well padded carpet works, or failing that, setting a thick rug or towel or something similar under your computer will help to decrease sound transmission. Further steps can be taken to isolate and deaden the sound of a PC if you are really concerned. As it stands, my PSU produces more noise than my proc fan - even with the case open. The weather here in Portland, Oregon (think Degobah, like Yoda) more or less demands that you clean the mud out of your fans at least twice a year. I learned this the hard way when my previous proc died (yes, from overheating).

This poor old clunker has never gone over 40C, and thats only because thats what the room temp was at the time. Now if I was a dedicated gamer, I obviously would not be running what I am, but it does serve my needs very well. IE, getting mail, music, and watching movies.
