Laptop help choosing CPU
I am looking at purchasing my first Laptop, I currently own a PC and due to my travel and starting a new university I need a new computer. I think a Laptop would suit me best, but I do not know what type of processor to choose with it.
I see basically all of the laptops I have seen come with intel chips but of those some have pentium 4's at 2.8-4 GHz while some have Centrino Mobile but hose only go to 1.8 Ghz right now. I will be using this for mostly word processing, e-mail, listening to music, watching DVD's, but I would also like to take advantage of wireless networks and the new games that are coming out. Do you have any suggestions about which way I should go and maybe what other pieces of hardware I should Include in my new laptop? And what I should watch out for to avoid when purchasing? Thankyou Ash |

Hi Knight_Ash and welcome to PCTechTalk
I looked at this site and all of the models offered there seem to fullfil your requrements (wireless, word proc), except the gaming would be a problem. I saw only 1 model (Acer I think) that offers a decent (well not really but still better than the others) Radeon 9700 video card. And it will be the issue with games. I have played around pretty much with Compaqs (HP-Compaqs though I never owned one) only so I can say just good words for this brand. Never had any problems at my Uni. So my advice is first have a look at the other specs (HDD - yeah as big as possible, big enough TFT - 15.1" would be great, I saw some had DVD writers as well) and leave the games as a last priority. You will still be able to play some of them or most, but latest and greatest in games hehe is still for desktops. Hope I helped to some extent Cheers |

hehe my laptop plays doom 3! at a steady 56fps!
![]() I would advise spending whatever you can afford.. laptops go out of date VERY quiclkly and youll find that the more you spend now on faster components (especially processor) the longer youll be able to use it.. a while back i bought a p2 laptop.. about 2 months back i sold it in favour of a newer laptop becuse it wouldnt run anything efficiently anymore!.. Being a student, I'm thinking you have limited resources. If this is the case and your not looking for a gaming machine. then ECS has a great line on inexpensive laptops.
However if your looking for a power machine, then personally I would suggest a HP. My HP is a year old P4 2.4 512 ram, 40 gig, built in everything, including firewire 4 usb's cdrw/dvd-rom. HP Pavillion ze5475ca it's been a great little work horse, I have an external HD for storage, and a 5.25 external case with I use for a varity of items from HD's to burners. when at home I have an external keyboard & mouse. I have played WIII, Doom3, and Halo, and HL2 on it.
