DVD to DivX with VirtualDub
This guide will help you to convert any DVD to a single AVI with DivX video and MP3 audio using VirtualDub as main encoder.

I have just updated the article. To be able to convert DVDs you need VirtualDub-Mpeg2, not the standard VirtualDub. Sorry for the mistake.
