Laptop Hard Drive Crash

Hi, all!

I have been wrestling with a laptop hard drive crash. It was running merrily along when the screen went black. When I powered it back up it would not boot, giving me an error on trying to read the drive. I ended up calling Compaq for tech support, only to be told the drive was bad and that I'd have to send it in for a new drive. When I asked about the data on the old one they said "use backups to restore". At this point I removed the drive and bought an external enclosure. Plugging it into my USB port on my desktop it was not recognized at all. It appears to be graveyard. The laptop is out of warranty.

Does anyone have any suggestions on data recovery other than a service?

Thanks in advance.

Hi and Welcome to PCTT!

I cannot think of anything else except a service if the drive is dead. At the repairs they can check and replace the HDD controller. You can do nothing at home in this case.... - HDD is unrecogizable by anything, isn't it?

Thanks for your reply.

So far it is unrecognizeable by my desktop via an external drive enclosure.

Someone on another service suggested freezing it and retrying, but other than that I'm running out of options other than a data recovery service.
