My software of choice for data recovery would be FinalData Enterprise. I have successfully recovered extremely important data with this software and it has never failed me. From hard disks to compact flash cards, this software works wonders!

I use PC Inspector File Recovery. It's free to download here: http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/UK/welcome.htm

I've heard that freezing a hard drive works sometimes but I've never tryed it.

I have also PC Inspector File Recovery. It's a very good program to restore a file that you just deleted and it's not in the Recycle Bin. But I don't think that it's better than Get Data Back recovering files from a partition that Windows is unable to mout (anyway it is able to recover files in this situation).

Some time ago I had to recover files from a partition that was completely destroyed for no aparent reason, with hundreds of files. Get Data Back was able to recover about 50 to 60% of all files (it recovered almost all files, but many were damaged, so I don't count them). In a FAT partition the chances of recovering a file increase if the drive has least fragmentation (another good reason to defragment FAT partitons.)

OK, GREAT NEWS. Our member was able to completely recover his files from his DEAD harddrive. (I was more than a little skeptical)

There are 2 versions of this program... 1 for FAT and 1 for NTFS.
He used the FAT version.

Here is the feedback he gave to me (to share with you):

GetdataBack feedback
Hi!

Sorry it took too long.

GetDataBack is one of the best lifesavers ever created. I haven't encountered a lot but I'm willing to bet anything that this product belongs up there! It should be called The Resuscitator or Rescue 911. It is definitely a must-have - especially for ulra-tweakers like you.

I have no idea how it works but it restored 99+% of the data contained in my busted HDDs (I've already used it on two).

Using it is prettly easy even for a novice like me. It's almost automatic except for a few clicks on the next button (like being guided by a wizard). It's almost impossible to mess-up. In case you do mess-up or you're not satisfied with the restoration job, you can always re-do the whole thing because it doesn't do it's thing in the hdd being scanned.

The steps are:

1. Scan(search) for (possible) drvies.

The choices are already ticked. You just un-tick choices you don't want found. I leave it as is.

2. Select source.

Here you select the physical drive, logical drive (have no idea what it is), Image files, Arrangement files, Physical remote drives to recover data from.

3. Select range and file system.

You can either search the whole drive or just part of it.

You can also select FAT12, FAT16, or FAT32. It is my practice not to tamper with things I don't understand so I left it at FAT32(default).

4. Select file system

DUH. I just clicked on next.

5. Recovery Tree.

VIOLA! My files as I saw them before they went inaccessible. Here you can check the integrity of the file through the built-in viewer or you can run it through it's ***ociated program. But it is not restored yet; what you see is just an image of the restoration job. You still have to select the files you want to recover and copy/restore them to your working hdd (there is a warning not to copy the files to the hdd being scanned).

Now if only GetDataBack can format an hdd which cmos does not detect. But I'm already more than satisfied with the results. After all, I Got my Data Back!

The whole process took only a few minutes and my baby's minutes-old pics have been recovered. Joshua (my baby) is now 3months old and I am confident that I will be able to show him these pics when he's grownup. Thanks to LPDad and Igalan! Thanks to GetDataBack!

I also downloaded mrgorilla's 50MB proggy but I haven't burned it on cd yet. Thanks to him just as well.

In the meantime, I will go back to being an anonymous visitor again watching you guys make very good use of this wonderful facility that it available to everybody.

Thank you very much,

JP

I'm glad to hear that you could recover your files .

Now it's time to take some steps to prevent this kind of disasters in the future: frequent backups . If you have a CD-R/RW and you have installed a packet writting program (InCD, DirectCD, DLA...) there are free programs to do selective backups to CD-RW. Once you have set the initial options you can do a backup in no time with a couple of clicks . I will start a thread about this and see what can we get .

GetDataBack = Great program.
I have experimented with it, and even after deleting a partition, then re-partitioning and formatting, I was still able to recover almost all the important data. If this cant find your data, it probably isn't there, and you'll need to spend ALOT of money to get it

Red face Watch Out for WinME

This post is really, really far behind the rest, but I just wanted to include a side-note... The original problem described by Anon just happened to me - except I didn't make any hardware upgrades/moves/additions, etc.... I just booted. Like normal. And DOS couldn't detect the disk.

Just like Anon, the PC that crashed was running ME. Now, I've always been of the opinion is that ME is really, REALLY unstable as it is, but after reading this I'm starting to think that ME may have played a pivotal role in the malfunction of my drive (altho I've never really trusted Scandisk either, you know?) Granted, my drive was probably burnt out on me as it was... but still.

Either way, I'm stoked I found this forum while searching for the solution. Hopefully, using all of your excellent suggestions, I too will be able to recover most of my stuff off my poor, taxed drive.

Oh, and if you or any loved ones still has ME on their box, get-it-off get-it-off get-it-off! Anything - even XP - is better than ME. Anything.
