Nice work jay-jay :thumbs up

Thats one of the major problems.. the cable modems especially will keep track of the first device by "mac address" when you first use it. Then if you try to plug in a router it freaks out and wont let you validate for internet access.

The other way around this is to unplug the power of your cable modem and let it reset for 15 seconds.. then plug it back in. Whe you plug in the router after that it shoudl work fine.

Thats what I did

Yeah, i thought it could of been the MAC address, i was starting to think that it was something wrong with either the cable modem or the router.

Anyways its working fine now so im happy, figured out how to forward ports aswell so im getting high ID's on eMule now

Thanks for your help guys!

lol, sorry Cirga, but i just think its funny seeing you tech support router issues for all these people. i didnt think that setting up a windoze server on your network would give you mad networking skillz. heh, jk.

Hey guys! I Just bought an old pentium 2 box. I plan to make it into a firewall in the following configuration:

the coax cable comes out of the wall, into PC(firewall), out of second NIC into router, which swiches to 3 other comps.

I was just wondering which OS i should use for the firewall. Right now I am torn between Linix and Microsoft XP. I have the techlical now-how for Linix, but the potential lack of firewall options frightens me. Also, i am planning on running a web server and an FTP server off the firewall box. Maybie also Kazzaa, but that would be later, i think. Any other thoughts would be welcome as well

Hmm.. Well with linux you would be much more secure. And you could do alot more than just a firewall.. like a portscanner blocker etc..

I think fa0lan is needed to answer this question though.

There is one firewall we have played with before.. its the Trex firewall from Livermore Software Laboratories Inc. And that firewall is pretty awesome.. its more of a proxy.

Well if you dont want to spend lots of cash.. think of speed. A pentium 2 chip may have some trouble running XP "efficiently". I have yet to try XP on a Pentium 2 system.. so I cant say for sure but I know windows 2k advanced server doesnt like my Pentium 2 233 system.

If you run linux it will run very smoothly on that machine. I am sure finding firewall software to use would be simple.. and most of linux distributions are free.

Xp Will run fine on a P-II 350 system--Provided you have more than 128 RAM-- Actually 256 is the Minimum RAM you should have for it to load up and run with any kind of speed.

My wife's 'puter is a P-II 350 with 386 RAM and it runs like a charm!!!

please, dear god, dont use windows xp! sorry...just a little biased i suppose. personally i would say use openbsd (http://www.openbsd.org); that is all i ever use for it. its a very small, stable, secure and FREE unix-like os, that has many great features for just such a device. i've used it for everything from file servers to web servers, routers, firewalls, various game servers, and more. openbsd.org has pretty good documentation, and there are quite a few other sites out there with good write-ups on using it for a router (bsdvault.net for example). system requirements for it are quite low as well (minimum of like 16mb of ram i believe, and just about any old processor). last time i had to reboot my router was about 2 months ago, and that was only because i recompiled the kernel and wanted to boot up using the new one. other than that i have never had a problem with it (only running a p2 300, 64mb ram, 2 nics and a 1gb hard drive).

one thing i would recommend you not do is run an ftp server (or allow telnet, for that matter) on your router/firewall, since ftp (and telnet) transfers passwords in clear text (non-excrypted) and there are a great many exploits for it. ssh/sftp, yo!

second to openbsd i would recommend either freebsd or slackware, and short of that some other flavor of linux, such as mandrake.

anyways, just my two cents. if you go with openbsd let me know if you would like any help configuring it. ill try to burn you an iso of if too if you want.

that depends entirely on what you what to do with that linux distribution. personally i would recommend at least 32mb+ for a dedicated router/firewall (more if you have a very high traffic network, i.e. an office environment), and at least 64mb+ for a web/file server (again, more if its a high traffic server). if you plan on running some version of X-windows you will probably want to double those numbers (depending on the version you use, though i wouldnt recommend running X as well). if you do decide to run X might i recommend Fluxbox.

Badblue issues w/ Router

I am trying to share files with the latest version of Badblue.

General Setup

OS: XP Pro (XP firewall disabled)
Router: Linksys BEFSR41
IP Address: 192.168.111.100
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.111.1
DSL CO: Bellsouth
Protocol: PPPoE
Static IP: No (random IP address)

Badblue Setup

Dynamic DNS options

Use dynamic DNS: Yes
Server name: dyndns.org
Host-name: blury
DynDNS user-name: blury

Set searching options

My IP Address: blury.dyndns.org
Proxy server (name:port): N/A
Proxy exceptions: N/A

Router and DSL Setup

I've forwarded port 80 in my DSL modem and router through both protocols.

What is my problem?

I have to use DynDNS because my IP is random and my router blocks my real IP (in Badblue, it uses 192.168.111.100 instead). I can connect initially to Badblue, but my shared address (blury.dyndns.org) is not accessible. I can not even access it from my own PC. My files are listed when I search for them, but I can not open the address or download anything. My account at dyndns.org is a valid one and is updating my dynamic IP like normal.

Anything I'm missing here? Thanks buds for any help. This has been asked quite a few times in the Badblue discussion board without a solution that has worked for me.

Blury. I think you just need to set yourself on a static IP address to get this working properly. The thing is.. that even though your router is doing DHCP you can still set yourself as static and you will be just fine. As long as you are within the DHCP range and no other device is taking your IP address it will work.

Of course you will have to enter in all the information such as DNS servers etc. If you need help finding those let me know.
