External Harddrive Question?
Hello,
My operating system is WindowsMe. I know some people are probably already laughing, but it works for me. I have two harddrives in my system and an external zip drive. My second drive was to be for storage but 11 gigs are being taken up by MP3's. I really don't want to image my drive and put a bigger secondary harddrive in. My question is, will my system take an external harddrive like a 40 gig Maxtor or Western Digital for my MP3 storage. I have been told know. If anyone could give me some advice I would greatly appreciate. Thank you! |

Hi Petlydecker.....
HHHmmmmmmmmmmm, so what you are wanting to do is take a standard "internal" IDE harddrive and use it as a removable storage external drive???????I would say yes it can be done with the right hardware. There are several kits available for doing what you are wanting to do. Either Firewire or USB kits. Most USB kits will support either USB 1.1 or 2.0 specifications. These kits contain all the necessary hardware, cables, interfaces, driver setup, and most will work with other IDE devices as well (DVD Rom, CD/CDRW Rom devices) Here is a link to one manufactor, just to give an idea of what the conversion entails: Here Hope this helps......

Will depends on what type of ports you have on your computer like usb 1.1 (standard usb), fireware, usb 2. If you have firewire or usb 2 then I would go for it. But you bought a external hard drive and only had usb 1.1 then it would be very very slow to transfer files to and from that drive. And it also depends on what type of processor speed you have too.

I have 1.1 usb ports on my motherboard. I am thinking of adding a Adaptec 2.0 usb card or another type (manufacturer) and running the external harddrive through that. I guess I was just wondering if my operating system was able to recognize and handle all of these components, 2 hard drives, 1 zip drive, and another external harddrive running from a 2.0 usb port? I also wanted to thank everyone for their advice.
Thank you. |

I just wanted to follow up with everyone. I ordered my 2.0 usb card today. I am going to install that first and then order my external drive next. I have not picked out the drive I want yet. I will post a message here to let everyone know if it was a success. Thanks Music Pirate, gbread49, and thanks to rastagard.
