Stopping a file from execution

I want a method or an already developed program to do the following :

The program must run in the background in Windows and it must stop a particular mentioned file from being executed. It would be good if a custom message can be displayed instead of the file being executed.

Can anybody help?

Hi nikhilwason.....

So what you are looking for is a utility/program that will alert you when a program (presumably one that you have not launched yourself) attempts to automatically open/run on its own?

Also, from what you describe, I take it that you want to be able to pre-configure it to monitor specific programs/apps?

Don't know if there is such a utility, but it does sound like a nice idea....Anyone have any ideas?

BTW: Welcome to UTC.......

Try Poledit it allows to set which exe files are allowed to run on your machine.

Is a little tricky tool, if you don't add explorer.exe to the allow list you don't get your desktop :S.

BTW to do this kind of selection you can use a common virus practice set your own program as the launcher for ".exe" filetype. if i remember correct it is under HKCR / exefile in the registry.
Then it should prompt with the description and ask to run it or not.
Becareful 'cause if for some reason you delete your program exe then no other program will run.

The Norton internet security does something like this but I think it does it for programs attempting to connect to the internet. I know you can add things to be watched and set rules for them (automatic rule,,Block, permit, ask before allowing etc...) but I have never added anything to it so I am not sure if you could add a non internet item to this list. Its worth a try.

I had a problem with the XP autoupdate thing and LiteStep. It would pop up in the systray, but when I put the cursor over it it disappeared, opnly to popup again in a few seconds. It pissed me off so I deleted the executable (renamed actually). That's always a good way to prevent a prog from running

If you were on windows 2000 or XP and had your disks formatted as NTFS, you could disallow read/write permissions for ANYONE (including yourself) to that file. I have done this with several spyware applications rendering them useless forever

Access Denied
I agree, in properties, remove check for simple file sharing, that should bring up a security tab, go into security and deny access..:p

I used this trick before Kazaa lite, preventing Kazaa from accessing its pop up ads folder.
