Help with Shutdown after up/downloading, please!

First- sorry for not participating more in forums- but I am (following what I learned here) sharing a little music with others- thanks.
Question- also using FTP_Client Pro to send a few things to a particular friend. When I check 'shutdown program after use' no problem. If I try 'shutdown computer'- see usual 'settings being saved' (windows 2000) and then blue screen with 'safe to shutdown' message. But I have to power it down myself still as it just stays on that screen. Thought maybe energy saving settings in control panel- so set to never/ then tried always shutdown )or soething to that effect)- still no luck. Appreciate any help or ideas. Thanks ahead of time- onestep
p.s. hope right forum- apologize if it isn't. Thanks again.

Does this only happen when you run the FTP is does it happen everytime you shutdown?

BTW-I moved this to Computers.

If this happens everytime you try to shut your comp down, it could be your power supply.I have seen that cause problems like that.

Thanks for quick response- only happens when using FTP- never saw "now safe to shutdown' otherwise. I do need a new power supply- but since it only happens with FTP... Thanks again- onestep
p.s thanks for putting it in the correct forum.

Try waiting about 5 min. before shutting down after you close the FTP. The FTP could still have something running in the background...or you might just not have enough resources to finish the shutdown process...try shutting down a few things manually 1st, then shutdown.

I am inclined to agree with lion on this one. The ftp client is probably not shuting down properly when you shutdown your 'puter (thus causing the system to hang.) Possibily a ".dll" file not being released (or taking a long time to release) by the program. This is actually a common problem with many programs.

Seeing that this only occurs while FTP_Client Pro is running, I'd doubt that is a power related problem. If it happened all the time, then that would definately be a possibility.

Try shutting your ftp client down first. (Open Task Manager to determine if it is properly shut down) before attempting to shutdown or restart your computer. You can further troubleshoot this problem by using Task Manager. Try to determine what processes are opened when you open the ftp client, and check to see if they are all closing when you close the program.

Hope this helps.....

Thanks- hadn't considered I might be just impatient and need to wait a little longer. I know have enough resources- so I'll check the task manager as suggested, (as usual- never occurred to me) had the dreaded Millenium for so long- still finding my way around 2000. Thanks again- onestep
p.s you know... you gave me an idea which program might be hanging things up- I'll try to report back- if I don't implode the OS! Thanks again- onestep
