Hi all; Ive seen on other forums about users who have 'clocked ' their pcs.Could someone tell me what this means, and what benefits it has?
Also is it worth doing to my own pc? [edit- post moved-->you need to post in the correct forums to get the correct kind of help---Thanks, LPDad] |

"Overclocking" refers to increasing the clock speed of your CPU (making it run faster than it is rated).. Example: take a 900MHz CPU and making it run at 1.0GHz..... This usually involves changing jumper settings on your mobo for newer systems and in some cases the settings can be changed in the BIOS for "jumperless" mobos. (voltage & multiplier settings).
Most CPU's are capable of running at speeds higher than advertised. The advantages are obvious for overclocking, however, there are some disadvantages. The main one is HEAT! The faster a CPU runs, the more heat is generated...so...when overclocking, ensuring that you have an adequate cooling scheme set up is most important. Also, overclocking a CPU can reduce its life expectancy, plus if you are not careful and overclock too much, you can easily fry your CPU. Hope this gives an idea on what overclocking is.....

NP Nutkey, Just trying to get you the most exposure with the best people to answer your threads.
Download the belarc advisor from www.belarc.com. Run it and it will tell you all sorts of good informtion about your entire System. (motherboard, chip, etc). WCPUID is the program that displays the CPU information of your personal computer. Shows Frequency, Multiplier, Chipset Info. etc ... (Great little utility) you can Download it FREE at : http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA002.../download.html Those 2 programs should give you almost all the info about your computer you would ever need (unless you really want EVERYTHING-- then you can try Sandrasoft.)

LPDad.. Kudos to you.
Just had to post to thank you for that link to belarc.. I work on clients computers through PCAnywhere every day where I work.. and the new clients we get sometimes create quite a hassle because they can never tell us what exactly they have on their PC .. nor what they need from us to get our software to run properly.. Belarc just saved me about 8 hours worth of installation time.. what a bufoon I was for not finding something like this earlier.. I guess the troubleshooter me just liked digging.. Appreciate it LpDad. EDIT: On this note.. was curious if you knew of a program that can check "x" files and tell you the dates on them on a PC? like a file checker.. where you can speficically tell it to check this file and tell you the date and maybe keep it in a list on a text file or something? Anything you know of LPDad?

To piggy back on what LPDad said, another great program for telling you just about everything you want to know about your system, from hardware to system capabilities, and a few other things in between is "SiSoft Sandra 2003"... There is a freeware version of the program and it should be quite sufficient for most users in providing what you want to know about your 'puter....You can also do benchmarking with it, an added plus.......

Just make a folder somewhere convenient to extract to. ![]() OK Here is the latest version of WCPUID: NOTE: In order to be able to attach the file to this thread I had to do a little creative packaging. Download the file wcpu310.zip...Then after you have saved it to your harddrive then RENAME it to "wcpu310.exe" (just change the .zip to .exe) - this then makes it a self extracting file which you can extract to a folder of your choice.
