HHHmmmmmmmm,,, ok first open WMP and make sure your file associations are set for the formats you want to open with WMP.

Also, check this.....Go to Windows Explorer/View/Folder Options/File Types.....in the drop down list look for the registered file types of the media files....check to see if they are associated with WMP. Also, check each one to make sure in the Actions box, Open & Play are listed.

If that is not the problem, you might try reinstalling WMP....(You will need your Windows CD or the Windows CAB files need to be on your computer.) Go to: Control Panel/Add-Remove/Windows Setup/From the drop down list look for Multimedia (If I remember correctly, thats where you will find the WMP entry in Win98.) Remove it and then reboot your computer. Go back and reinstall WMP. It should reset the defaults when it installs.

Hope this helps.....

Sounds like you may have some corrupted and/or missing files. Have you installed/uninstalled anything recently that may have overwritten or deleted any system files?

Don't know if you have ever used SFC (System File Checker), it can alert you to changed/deleted and or possible corrupted files and will prompt you to reinstall or replace the corrupted file(s).

Go to: Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information......Click on that...from there go to the Tools tab and in the drop down list choose System File Checker......Run the utility (if you have never ran it before it could take awhile). Make sure you have the "Log" to file checked. That way when its done you can print out the log to help verify your files. If you get an error saying cannot open log file, just open it in Wordpad, that only means it is too big to open in Notepad.

One other thing to check.....Go to Start/Run..and type in..DXDIAG.. This will open the DirectX Diagnostic Utility...You can verify your DirectX files (versions/problems) with this utility. If you notice discrepancies, I would recommend reinstalling DirectX. Its ok to just install it over the existing DirectX.

some of your system files are corrupt, and you are missing codec associations that you need.
Do what Gbread suggests, run SFC, reinstall directX.
Make sure you uninstall ALL codecs that you currently have installed, Reboot your computer, run SFC, reboot again then reinstall your nimo codec pack with the basic options only.

Whew,,,, maybe we need to rack our brains somemore on this one....*L*

Ok, the problem with reformatting your 20Gig drive. Did you "fdisk" (use the command utility "fdisk") before you tried to reformat?

You should do this first to delete and then create new DOS partitions. This will also create a new MBR (Master Boot Record)

FDISK will also set the Primary partition to "active". The Primary DOS partition HAS TO BE MADE ACTIVE BEFORE IT CAN BE FORMATTED.

If you have never used FDISK before...MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THE PROMPTS EXACTLY! (They are self-explanatory)....

To start FDISK (Using your Start Up floppy).....At the A:\ prompt, type FDISK and press Enter. (A:\fdisk)

After you are finished, then FORMAT your drive using the FORMAT command utility. The command to use is:

A:\format C: /s (the /s switch copies the system files from the source disk to the destination drive and makes the drive bootable.)

If you still get the error you described, chances are you might have physical disk surface errors that are preventing the drive from being formatted.

Instead of going thru all the hassle of trying to find out what is causing your media problem, which is definately time consuming and frustrating, it might be best to start with a CLEAN reinstall of Windows. Afterwards, and before you install any other programs, check to see if the problem is gone. It should be....
