New CD-Rom no works
Stupid peace of junk cost me to upgrade to a new PC! Was working fine then it all went squirrelly, with win 95. After I solved that problem with a long night seating with my wingman reinstalling win95 and an upgrade 2 win98 it worked fine. That is till about a week and a half later. The CD-Rom all of a sudden decided to die in the middle of Myst adventure. At first I thought no problem just the drives life has ended. So I saved up my pennies and dimes and made a trip to Radio Shack. Got a nice 52X and put her in…at first the thing looked like it would work. But, when I got to win98 it didn’t even know that it had A CD drive, but setup did. None less to say I was unhappy I than tried to get it to work in every way but to duct tape it on, and beat it with a hammer. That’s been 9 months or more and it still hasn’t got any closer to working.
Dose any 1 have any insight into this? |

The solution is easy. Just Duct-tape it securely on and start beating it with a ball-peen hammer!!
Some Ideas. (Try these one at a time, until you find the problem or until the problem resolves) first: make sure the settings on the drive itself are correct. It should be on "master" if it is at the end of the ribbon cable, it should be on "slave" if it is on the middle connecter. (if you have a newer computer then try using the "csel" or automatic setting) If you have 2 drives on the cable ( if you are using both the master and the slave positions) and if the settings on the drive are incorrect, then you will only be able to see one drive. If you have 2 drives try swapping the drives to see if the new drive then works. Try different settings on the drive selectors And ...make sure you have the cable connecter correct--some of the cables can be put on "upside/down or backwards". Try using a newer ribbon cable (they come in 2 sizes, depending on your computer-- Try connectiong with a new cable, -- if you have a choice, use the larger size) Make sure you are getting power to the drive!!! (is your power source large enough or are you trying to get by with a 200W POS) After you have tried all of the above (and have triple verified that the drive/drives are hooked up correctly and powered--Then go into the control panel/system/DEVICE MANAGER--- Choose the Disk Drives and the REMOVE IT (REMOVE ALL OF THE DISK DRIVES !!!!!) Get rid of them, Flush em, G'bye !! THen Reboot. Let windows 98 try to see the new harddrives and then reinstall them (and install the drivers) Hopefully that will work. Let me know how things work out.

Oh, and one more thing:
for future reference I would not even bother with replacing a CD-ROM drive. Instead get yourself a nice DVD-ROM (or even a cheap CDRW) drive. The prices on these drives have dropped so low that often they are CHEAPER than a replacement CDROM drive, and the DVD drive is just as fast at reading CD-R media (usually 40-50x) plus you have the advantage of the DVD drive being able to read virtually all types of media (yes, there are some CD-ROM drives out there that still have trouble reading certain CDRWs and Colored CD-Rs. And in the future we are probably going to be seeing more and more programs (Read--Games!!) being distributed on DVD media. 'course, that's just MY Opinion!!!

One other thing you might check......In your BIOS Setup, check to see if the BIOS is recognizing the drive. (A quick indication is at boot, if the drive is shown on the Boot screen. Should be listed as either a Master or Slave on one of the IDE connectors, depending on which connector it is connected too.)
In your BIOS, make sure that the location that your drive is connected (IDE Primary or Secondary - Master/Slave is Enabled or is set on Auto detect)

Just have to say.. Right on LPdad and Gbread
Dont think I see it enough.. but you two need some kudos for this info. This is the kind of thing HP would charge a user 150 bucks an hour to explain.

Thanks for your input but i the only way i think i am going to get that thing to wor is to send it off, By the way it was a P1 100mhz with 1 CD drive, but i have wasted my time and yours on this futile hopr to repair it my self. I think this sick cow needs a visit to d vet. By the way i have 2 old betsy and the 1 i use al the time; so no worries about me missing a bit of UTC due to down time ( knock on wood).:computer:
