MSN messenger

i have tried to disable msn messenger at the startup using msconfig but every time i restart my computer it starts up also. When i right click on it, it tells me the program is being used by something else like IE or outlook express and others. Any idea how i can stop this?

Fister
Sign into MSN
go to Tools
go to Options
click the tab called Preferences
Unhighlight the box that says 'run this programwhen widows starts'

save changes and restart your computer

Yea it can be very annoying. Whenever you run MSN, it adds itself back to "Run on startup"... Typical M$ wanting to get all over your system. I'm not sure how to stop it, there must be a way - mabye some of the other cows can help you out there.

My advice would to be scrap the horrible official MSN client and download Trillian (or prefrably Trillian Pro)... Connects to everything & has a tonne of features. Thats just my opinion, I know there are some people that like the official MSN, for whatever reason....

btw, is it true the new msn messenger (whatever version it's at now) contains spyware? Just what I've read, could just be speculation... :\

Trillian

[Edit - fister gave you your answer as I was typing this]

If your running Outlook Express 6 it will start it when it starts unless you tell it not to. That could be why it wont let you disable it from starting at start up.

Fister has it right. It is no problem to remove it from startup. Also dont dump it, if you make the better half mad now things can get bad. That reminds me of a joke. A young couple were on their honeymoon, and the hubby a rather large chap tossed his pants to his petit wife and told her to put them on. She says I cant they are too big. He says dont you forget it. She tosses her panties to him and tells him to put them on. He says I cant get in to them they are too tight. Her reply and you wont until you change your attitude.

Stop it the way you been shown above by the direction for MSN and MSCONFIG, then:

Clean the registry using RegCleaner 3.1.................

Delete the Key.....

H_K_Loacal_Machine..........software.............. etc.........

(somewhere around there)

Delete the the whole MSN FOLDER!

Then reboot. GOne forever, unless you choose to re-install it!

If you don't use MSN Messenger and you just want to get rid of it, there are several ways...The first involves editing a system file and then going through the Add/Remove in Control Panel.

The second is much easier......Just go to Start/Run and type in (or copy/paste) this command:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection
%windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

(Note: There should be a "space" between the word "Section and the first %.....LaunchINFSection %windir%..........) The command is too long to render on a single line on this page.

That command will uninstall MSN Messenger, short, sweet and to the point!

I remember seeing that on www.mess.be . I believe that there was a method to block it from being installed on your computer. Nice one g-man

I can't take the credit for that "tweak" wish I could because it is a good one.

I found it searching for ways to get rid of the "junk" that M$ doesn't want you to delete from WinXP. I hate having software on my 'puter that I don't use or have no use for.

Now if I can only find a way to get rid of Outlook???????
