Rookie question

K, here's one far yah.
I bought a Mac, and it's good times. I've had some success with P2P programs, but I'm really frustrated with the PC/Mac compatability. I'd like to learn to program my own software, or at least make sense of what is out there in shareware. I've got no experience programming anything but my VCR.
What's a good start?
JAVA?
UNIX?
Hiding under my desk?
Drinking lots of coffee and buying a PC...that's not a real choice.
:computer:
I'm also Canadian...another strike against me...any tech schools to look into? Vancouver area.
thanks for any ideas you have

C++.

Java is not bad but slow as hell, unfortunately .NET will own it.

there's no doubt that .NET will ship standard w/ future versions of Windows. if M$ decides to ship a version for *nix it's GAME, SET, and MATCH.

BTW, MamiyaOtaru

did you get my PM about putting AquaLime on SourceForge?

C++ is kiddy stuff even I can use it, although when it becomes advanced it is a little difficult. At one time Java was the thing to know. Places to go to school, BCIT, CDI, or any of the local colleges. They are accepting late reg untill middle of July. If you have patience and a friend who knows C++ you can teach yourself if you buy one of those "teach yourself in 14 days books". Although in my opinion that really sucks. Another place to check out if you are busy with work is the Open Learnig Agency, It is located near BCIT. Go to www.mybc.com and get directions. That place you teach yourself with the help of an online tutor. If you suck at math then computer programming may not be your thing. While they are different they use the same part of your brain - that is similler thought paterns (logical). Other types of code are 'C' and 'machine code', although I dont know anything about either. Anything else?...

thanks for the pointers.
C+ is the starting point?
Limewire is Java based, I think, and it seems to be a huge success. no?
obviously there are some choices out there and everyone uses something different.
I've been checking out Langara Collegefor internet/cd course. it's over priced, but with finantial assitance, its attractive.(you get a G4 laptop with registration)
ill snoop around and see whats available.

it all depends on what you want and how much time you are willing to invest. i am not anti-Java, but as you can see most Java apps are much slower than native apps. the trade off is that your Java apps will run on any platform. i would recommend C++ as the starting point if you want to have marketable skills and the potential to build virtually anything in an efficient manner. there are a lot of easier languages out there like Delphi and VB (yuck! :no no: ). just RTFM and search the web a little so that you will make an informed decision.

BTW, everything is free online, you don't have to pay to learn programming. the Net has everything that you need to know.

C++ is the way to go, but hell boy why a MAC for crying out load? You know you're in for this type of problem.

I'd sell the motherf**** money hogger and get yourself a nifty speedy pc instead.

Heh, I don't think I'd buy a mac either, too damn expensive and incompatible, but for ease of use and stability they're pretty nice. Most graphics professionals use them.
