weird echo, custom computer

I don't know how to diagnose this...

I've got this weird echo thingthat just popped up a few days ago on my computer. It's in both the headphones & the speakers.

I'm running XP Pro with an ATI All-In-Wonder 8500DV, if the info helps. It seems like it might actually be getting worse every day.

There's another thread about this same problem in the forums, but that computer is an off-the-shelf Compaq, & the only advice offered seems to be Compaq related.

Whoever helps will be my new master, & I'll even send you -ug- naked pictures of my sister.

you say ... echo... yet you talk about video cards ...

if it is a blur on the screen.. (ghost ?) then... perhaps try re-installing your ATI drivers.
edit: if you are experiencing crashes, video freeze, digitalization, try a larger power supply, and check your videocard fan (in case it is stuck, and overheating).
if it is an audio echo, (soundcard driver problem in XP) try installing the official drivers for your soundcard.. not using the XP drivers.

if you still have echo.. try moving your microphone away from your speakers to reduce echo ( a not-so-common side-effect of feedback )

Still got problems.. ? let us know.. fixed it ? let us know how, so we can help others..

Good luck

Unhappy I think I've got the same problem

I have an ATI All-In-Wonder 9600 XT. After Updating to Windows SP2, my TV sound has been echoing. I also am working on another machine using an ATI TV Pro card, and the same thing is happening. Both machines are running XP (one home and one professional) with SP2 installed and DirectX 9.0c.

I contacted MS tech support (see this KB article: KB887131), and they sent me a hotfix. It's not available to the public yet since it hasn't been fully tested, but they sent it to me to try it out. Unfortunately, the hot fix checked for something on my PC which I didn't have,(and the log file wasn't nice enough to tell me what it was!) so the fix didn't install.

The problem seems to be related to a file called quartz.dll within DirectX 9.0c. My version is 6.05.2600.2749. This is found by opening DXDIAG (from Start, Run), and selecting the DirectX Files tab. (One of the verifications of the hotfix was what version of the DLL was installed on my machine.)

Someone suggested replacing quartz.dll with a version from a previous DIRECTX 9 release. This may not be a good idea if the DLL has changed, so I haven't tried it yet.

If anyone has a similar setup and they do NOT have the echo, please post the version of the quartz.dll file you have installed on your system. And of course, if you fixed it, that would be nice to know too.
