First Free iPods, now free Mac Mini...

Yeah. The same people who brought you thousands of people begging you to sign up under their name to get them a free iPod has now also started offering free Mac minis.

I managed to avoid the iPod, 'cause frankly I don't want one. But damn. Cmon. It's a free computer. I totally bit this one.

Grefov, if you want me to make "the switch", feel free to help

My referal link. Wee.

Hurray for pyramid schemes!

Hey, I needed printer ink anyway, so buying some through their referal thing wasn't a big deal.

I hear most people just sign up for one of the credit cards...

Aww, cmon. Don't you at least want to get me to "switch"!?

(I'm already actually half way on the referal front... slashdot makes it *WAY* too easy...)

The difference is I can build a PC, I can't build a Mac, and my built one will either be faster for a similar price, or cheaper for the same performance, or some variation thereof, depending on whether I wish to be price or performance bound.

With a Mac, I simply can't build it myself, and I'd have to pay significantly for that.

But, hey, I did go for FreeMiniMac.com rather than freedesktoppc.com though, didn't I (And the ones there are quite a bit faster! Check out the "Cyberpower Turbo"...). I figure I'd never pay for a Mac for reasons listed above, whereas my PC is good enough for the forseeable future, and I'll just build myself a new one when the need arises. 'sides, I really want to get Mac OS-X to mess around with

people who shall and must build their own computer don't opt for a Mac, simply no hassle. Most people, (esp. the target audience of Apple) don't build their own PC, or have a bad experience with doing so. In that respect I think it's unfair to draw up the 'I can't build it myself' barrier.

Building a PC yourself requires a lot of knowledge. I think that many home-made PC's are not assembled in an optimal way. Think of busses, clock speeds, pipelines, etc.
Perhaps I can even put it like this: the hardware Apple uses is completely adjusted to fit seemlessly. Suppose you could buy the several components apart, you wouldn't have much more choice than the Apple store gives you, as any other configuration would either not work, or not be optimal and thus useless. I still consider it to be a great thing that the OS knows exactly about the hardware. On both my Mac and Sun UltraSparc this results in amazing enjoyment and subtlety, while the same hardware with Linux OS misses many of the features that make the machine so enjoyable.

Why?

I was talking about myself. *I* build my own, therefore *I* have a computer which is cheaper than a Mac, and faster. I'm not saying that EVERYBODY can/should/would. I'm saying *I* do this. In fact, I bet a sizable portion of the denziens of this forum do the same, being a technically oriented website...

In my notes, anywhere, tell me one place where I've said "I don't think YOU should get a Mac". Anywhere. At all. You won't find it. I've listed reasons why I don't have one, yes, but I've never said that somebody else shouldn't get one. Hell, yesterday I tried (In vain, as it turned out) to convince somebody yesterday to get a powerbook (Apple's laptops are competitvely priced, after all, and I *can't* build myself a laptop... they ended up going with Dell, I think).

And Windows does a fairly good job with Hardware, too, considering the mass of variety out there. Aside from the glut of cheap NICs with really poorly written drivers, I've had a good track record with hardware working as it should.

hush
hush

I thought you and I were having a discussion here. For the same reason that you like to build your own pc, I don't care if I don't. All I wanted to say is that from the product perspective it's not that bad. From your personal perspective, however, it can be pretty bad. Just listen to what punky said, just her opinion

I wasn't about to make you mad! Plus in the end, you and I have to sort out ourselves what OS/hardware to work with. I can't/won't force you to use anything in particular, so I hope you won't do as well. (Open standards please!)

Didn't I JUST post that, not only have I never said that somebody else shouldn't use Mac, that yesterday I *TRIED* to get somebody to GET A MAC?

Why, then, would I force you to do anything?

Uhm, it's about computers, isn't it, i mean what are we talking about here, just a bunch of metal/plastic. (and 0's and 1's)
And about the brand, everyone has his/hers fav. same goes for almost everything in life.
Sports, cars, woman, man, music, movies, etc.
