Lockyer rants against peer-to-peer software
California State Attorney General Bill Lockyer is addressing the National Association of Attorneys General this week in Washington, D.C. He's the president this year, so he can say what he wants, I suppose. Apparently he is saying what someone else wants, instead.
Wired News is reporting that the letter being circulated by Lockyer to the association was actually written by a senior vice president of the Motion Picture Association of America. Not surprisingly, the letter is a rant against peer-to-peer software. The MPAA has been vocal in attacking P2P as they attempt to prevent it being used to share movies in the same way it has been used to share music. There is no difference to the software, of course, it's just that movie files are so much larger that only people with really fast connections are using it for movies so far. It's only a matter of time before movie distributors are in the same position as the recording industry, they figure. The letter says P2P software is "used almost exclusively to disseminate pornography, and to illegally trade copyrighted music, movies, software and video games." Well, there certainly is a lot of that going on. There is also a lot of paper being used to print that material, but no one has yet proposed that paper companies give a list of their customers to the police. Incidentally, the authorship of the letter was revealed by reading the hidden codes put into all Word documents by our old buddy Microsoft. Who says monopolies can't be fun? http://www.tulareadvanceregister.com...ews/97550.html
