Question Why does my new DVD writer crash my PC?

I bought a new DVD writer yesterday (16 x 4 x 16) which I installed into a six month old Dell. The PC found it but when I put a DVD in the whole machine keeps on crashing. The DVD writer works on my daughters other two older and smaller undefinedmachines no problem at all. They are all using XP Pro. I have tried it as a master, slave and cs but with no luck. Its running on its own iDE lead and I have run Norton systemworks, windoctor and chkdsk/r. Next step is to hit it with a hammer unless anyone has any ideas? The Dell has loads of memory and a couple of large hhds connected. C drive is quite full because its full of film clips which I have edited to a film which I want to copy to DVD and then delete. The other drive still has loads of space.

Cheers!

I had this problem at first also when i installed my burner and i know you have to have the bruner on the end of an IDE cable which it sounds like you do. The only other thing of the top of my head is that sometimes burners require a certain amount of disc space to burn DVDs maybe you do not have enough room left.

Also have you tried to play a DVD with the drive or just tried to burn with?

Another thing would be to make sure you have the proper driver for the burner just because you just bought it their might be a newer driver to correct certain problems, i would check this also. What type of burner is it?

Yes its on the end of the IDE cable. I'm only trying to play Dvds at the moment and its crashing. I have looked for an updated driver and there isn't one!
The Burner is an ARTEC (Artec.com.tw)..............

Have you tried a different Player...to watch your DVD...it could be the Player you are using on the Dell that is causing the problem.

SORTED! Well done, so obvious yet I hadn't checked that. I found that two programmes downloaded when I downloaded the driver were causing the problem. Whether it was one or both I have removed them and I'm now able to play DVDs and CDs ok. The programmes I removed were called Sonic Record Now v 7.21 and Sonic v4.90 (whatever that is!) I just need to install a DVD burning programme. I did have Intervideo windvd creator v2.0B14.436 on the machine. (but it was one of the first I removed but it didn't make any difference) I will install this again and see if the machine stays stable. Thanks for your help, have a good year! Brilliant!
