Dual Layer DVD-RW - any recommendations???
I was thinking to upgrading myself with a DVD-RW drive and now seeing that dual layer writers are about the same price as the old ones. Does anyone have such thing and can you post some recommendations? Any specific brand that would be good to have?

I have been reading a lot about the new dual layer writers and they sound great but the DVD's right now are still around $11 each but all of these writers will also write onto a standard DVD+-R I plan on buying a dual layer when the prices of the dual media come down. Also if you buy one i would stick with a major label right now to ensure you get support later on. My dvd burner no longer has support from the manufacturer.

My opinion is it's too soon to buy dual layer. The disks are not readily available and by the time they are the new burners will be faster, cheaper, better. It's the way of the world with computers. I have so many expensive, outdated burners in my closet. And worse yet, slow media by the boxful. I know, I could just go ahead and use the old disks by burning slower, but jeez, if ya buy the fastest burner, and use up all yer old disks, by the time they're gone the burner's not the fastest ennymore. LOL.
I would guess yer only gonna be burning single layer DVDs for a while till the dual layers become more available and cheaper. By the time that happens, the new dual layer burners will be twice as fast as yours. With 8 gigs of space, that is quite a bit of time. Right now, I think Sony is the best burner from what I've read. (it's also the way of the computer world that nothing else matters as long as yer the first to have something cool )

Thanks for the opinions guys and girls. And now what about signle layer - is there a decent product out there. Checked their prices and they all sound good (including the LG pasty mentioned). The Sony burners sold here have a LiteON optic system and I've heard bad things about LiteON DVDRWs (though my LiteON CDRW works great). Is this like that there?

Now that yer not gonna buy the dual layer, you can buy the best single layer and have money left over. I had great luck with my TDK, and not too crazy about my Plextor, yet they always get great reviews.
I've also heard good things about the LGs. You probably couldn't go too wrong with a cheapie burner either, they almost all burn a DVD in under 10 minutes and since sensible dual layer burners are really just around the corner, it may be just a year or so before the disks and burners are reasonable. |

Lite On SHW-160P6S
I just purchased a Lite On SHW-160P6S from mWave.com for $28.00. This thing is incredible and I am using it as a external burner on my WinXP system. I have no problem at all and it supports every burning type. Just made my first 8.5 GB disk, worked fine. The thing I also like about Lite On is there firware updates and they give you 2 face plates, black and white or grayish white. The disks are expensive though!
Good luck |
