I am actually being published.
I was very shocked.. but its true.. there was a contest at www.poetry.com that I entered just for fun.. I never really thought of myself as a good poet.. and now they are going to publish my poem along with 199 others in the book "Best of Poetry and Poets of 2003" this year.
You can read my poem Here. Its "A simple Rose" .. by Ben R Harlow. Just thought I would share.. it is kind of neat.

Cirga, I didn't wanna rain on yer parade here, but NitnayLion and Ripp are absolutely right! This is a scam. I had a buddy fall for this about 20 years ago and evidently it is still going on. He paid the money and of course was promised the chance to win the "big" prize, but he was also encouraged to keep spending more money for "extras". It seems like this book will be published and distributed to bookstores nationwide, but it never really is. The only people who get the book, (he never would tell me if he ever got any of the copies he ordered) are those who are "published" in it. I am pretty sure he spent about $200 with this outfit, and I think the only way they stay in operation is that people want to believe so badly that they are being published they are crushed when their dream turns out to be a scam. He never wanted to talk about it. I tried to warn him after reading the fine print, but his excitement was too overwhelming and I backed off, to keep from hurting his feelings.
In the end he got his feelings hurt anyway, and he lost a big chunk of cash. ($200 was a helluva lot of money 20 years ago!) |

I am skeptical either way on this. The only thing they asked me to pay for (if I wanted) was to pre-order a copy of the book.. which of course I didnt do. But I actually called them on the phone (Poetry.com) about it and spoke to someone before returning the proof'd version of my poem.. and it sounds really legit to me.
If they are indeed pulling a scam.. and what they wrote in the letter about it being put in the international libraries of poetry I will be taking action against them for forgery with my work. Either way.. I havnet paid a cent nor would I. Its neat that it might actually be getting published.. but I dont really care for a copy of the book. What is interseting is that my co-worker here .. one of hte programmers has been published by them twice now and he actually got copies of both books. And even got them on CD as well for free. Maybe there is something amiss here of a company that is not part of poetry.com scamming people?

I wasn't sure if it was the same deal, since it happened to my buddy so long ago. It would seem for them to operate this long they would have to make some changes, it's a nice touch publishing it online for instance. All I can say is I think he submitted his entry from the magazine section of the Sunday paper and was notified very quickly thereafter. It is my suspicion that every entry is a "winner" and will be published. If I am not mistaken what you get for your money is akin to a yearbook. A selfpublished book of poems underwritten entirely by the poets with of course a tidy little profit going to the publishing company. If it was clearly stated that, that is all this is, I feel it would be legitimate. But they try to lead you to believe that this is a book for general release and I don't believe it ever gets to anyone who doesn't have their poetry in it. (I further suspect that those who don't purchase a copy might not make the final "cut")
In any event, forewarned is , um, ah crap, I can never remember the second part to that saying, but you get the drift.................. |
