critical updates? are they really critical

I recently d/l ed a critical update for xp and after I installed it I lost my CD Rom and DVD drives. This was a recommended update from Microsoft due to one of there various errors that creates a security issue. Do I really need to download all the millions and billions of updates that microsoft releases after the release of its software??

Never a bad idea to get critical updates. But on the other hand.. some of them may not apply to you either. Its always good to read the description of the update to see if you really need it or not. I recently installed XP on a machine at work.. and updated it..then turned off the automatic update service.

Most updates are little things that will enver affect you.. so just be choosey before downloading them and letting it install. If it knocked out your drives.. thats always a bad sign.

Were you able to get them both working again?

I was able to get both drives functioning again by rolling back to the day before I installed the update. That is what told me it was the udate, that was the only thing I had done to my system.
When I rolled back to prior to the installs it restored the cd/dvd drives. I read up on the update it had said it was for everyone as it dealt with the big security issue that microsoft recently admitted was in all systems since 98.

hmmm linux is looking better all the time. Any recommendations on that end?

Ahh yes.. and in putting out a patch they break things. "Doh!". well I am glad your drives are working again.

For Linux.. if you want something easy to configure and not to difficult to use mandrake is a great way to start. Easy to get X Windows working in Mandrake.

Linux is nowadays very easy to install and configure (at least from my narrow experience

) - I just installed Red Hat and it was "click n' go".

If you're really intrested in "learning the linux ways" (lol) there are tons of beginners guides on the web
