Does anyone have any tips for..........

keeping windows 98 more stable? I have been having problems with it just having fatal errors out of the blue. It doesn't do it all the time, just every once in a while. Sometimes it seems like it does it more then others. I will probably be doing the upgrade to 2000 or Xp in the future but I would like to see if in the mean time I can do something about it.

It's almost impossible to keep 98 running good all the time. The only recommendations I can make are to do the normal utilities like scandisk and disc defrag. Another thing that might help is if you let the computer run all the time is to restart it once a week, for some reason 98 was never good against memory leaks.

This is true the only other obvious thing i can think of is to clear out any unnessessary crap that loads up when Windows boots. run MSConfig and disable what you can there. That should help a little too

I'd agree. Until you get something like XP you really wouldn't be able to do much except re-install the operating system. Unfortunatly you would lose everything. XP would be a good upgrade since you can upgrade it from every OS except for Windows3.1 and Windows2000 SERVER.

Unhappy Hmmmmmm........

Not to sound insulting, but I doubt that any OS just locks up all on it's own. How much RAM do you have? If the answer is less than 128M, then maybe a simple memory increase could fix the problem. How much unused space is on your HD? There should be at least 20%. Lastly, (already mentioned) what unnecessary programs are running in your sys tray. Use msconfig to turn these off until needed. Ah yes, one more thing (dreaded) when was the last time you reformatted the HD. A yearly reformat is considered normal maintenance by many. Hope that helped.

ive been operating win98se for the last 3 years and have not had to format or install it since. i keep copies of system.dat, user.dat, win.ini, system.ini in case something should go wrong with system config or user config. if it really becomes unbearable, ill use system.1st to restore the hardware config to a working state. i will have to agree about the memory leaks though, however, using a decent memory defragger should keep the uptime much longer without having to reboot the system. operating only necessary tsr's and processes will also contribute to a much more efficient system as well. changing certain thread priorities will also contribute to a much more stable system too. only time i get any bsod's is when i excute a program that demands complete process priority over the kernel or when the memory is badly fragmented.
