If you want good security Open BSD is great. Free BSD is close to the same but not quite. This is what i have been hearing from a few friends of mine.

If you have never tried Linux before.. perhaps go with something easy like Mandrake to get a feel for it. Linux is pretty secure either way.. but if you plan on running Apache etc.. might want to consider Open BSD as an option.

If you need info or help let me know. I will get on the phoen with my bud who has it installed currently and get some good info to peek at.

mandrake's a little over the top just for a router/firewall especialy on a system with a 428MB hdd , but i did find a nice little app called Freesco (http://www.freesco.org/)
you create a floppy disc using either windows or linux ,stick it in a p100 with a few nic cards to act as the router/firewall
configure it on the machine and save the changes back to the floppy and you have a fully functioning router /firewall/dns/dchp ect ect
can be used without even having a hard drive installed

Personally I would recommend OpenBSD for running a firewall/router. I've been using it for a little over 3 years now and have nothing but praise for it. Its very small, stable, and secure, and comes at the low, low price of free.

If you would like some help setting up an OpenBSD firewall/router, please feel free to either private message me or post questions here.
